it seems that if I leave my computer idle my AIM disconnects is there anyway to stop it?

Aside from getting something to strengthen your signal, such as a re-broadcaster, no. You could try lessening the distance between your wireless router and your computer, either by moving your computer closer to your router, or your router closer to your computer.
