Okay, I don't get what the hell just happened. Crash as best picture of the year? Not even. The only conclusion I can come to is that Brokeback and Capote split votes and Crash came out on the winning end of that one. Holy...damn.
I'm also highly surprised "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" won for Best Song, but pleasantly so. I don't know what Taraji P. Henson was doing at the end but whatever. What did everyone else think about the ceremony? Edit: If you want to discuss Oscars fashion, go to this thread. |

About this Crash thing:
Granted, I fell for it when I saw it. It gives you an emotional handjob, makes you feel something (especially that part with the little girl...) and then, in the end, leaves you dissatisfied. I wanted this movie to be great and it wasn't. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't very good. Like others have said, it says nothing new about racism and too over-the-top to be taken seriously. Is "everyone a little bit racist?" Of course. But it didn't need to be shoved down our throats like that. It comes off as arrogant, not only on the part of the filmmakers, but on the Academy as well. The Academy likes to think of itself as progressive and liberal but if they were really any of those things, the gay cowboys or the post-op transsexual would've won. Look at the awards ceremony, it was a big tribute to how progressive the Academy is, especially that whole bullshit montage with Malcolm X, A Time to Kill, and To Kill A Mockingbird. And about the last two, I noticed a similar trend in Crash, not just the racism bit. In order to have a "happy ending," the white male saviour archetype has to swoop in and save the day. It's been done a million times, can we have a new ending, please? Like Nate said, it lectured us on being racist but falls victim to it as well. |
