78th Annual Academy Awards, The Aftermath Options

Okay, I don't get what the hell just happened. Crash as best picture of the year? Not even. The only conclusion I can come to is that Brokeback and Capote split votes and Crash came out on the winning end of that one. Holy...damn.

I'm also highly surprised "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" won for Best Song, but pleasantly so. I don't know what Taraji P. Henson was doing at the end but whatever.

What did everyone else think about the ceremony?

am i the only one who thought crash was a horrible movie? crash was contrived, obvious, and very overrated. the underlying theme in this movie is that "everybody is a little racist". however, paul haggis's characters all were cardboard cutouts of the most extreme stereotypes, and everything that these characters do revolve around race. this movie hits you repeatedely over the head with "racism is still alive" and "everyone is racist". now, did you really need the movie crash to learn that? what did you really learn from the movie crash?

another reason why i did not like the movie was because it was unrealistic, from the dialogue to the movie scenes. does Los Angeles have only two police officers? another question, does anybody actually talk like the characters in the movie? every quote in the movie was related to race, and every character had a dark and light side. wouldn't it be great if racism was actually like that? this movie is an insult to anyone's intelligence.

now, im not criticizing the acting because the acting was outstanding, but the lack of character depth and irrelevent screenwriting nulled anything positive about this movie. i truly do believe that this was the worst best picture ever, even worse than chicago back in 01.

peter debruge of the miami herald said it best, "Crash is basically just one white man's righteous attempt to make other white people feel as if they've confronted the problem of racism head-on."

listen, if you want a movie that really delves into race, then you would be better watching american history x or even spike lee's do the right thing. if you don't know that racism is bad or you are a big ludacris fan, then go see crash.

One last one. You’ve just been told by your hot, hot girlfriend, with whom you’re lucky to be sleeping in the first place, that she is not Mexican as you presumed; that her mother is from Puerto Rico and her father is from El Salvador. What do you say?

1. “I’m sorry, honey. I’m surprised I didn’t know that. Now come back to bed.”
2. “Really? How did they meet?”
3. “Who took [all Latinos] and taught them to park their cars on their lawns?”

And on and on and on. Every scene. Put a little pressure on somebody and they blurt simplistic racist sentiments. Right in the face of someone of that race.

Worse, none of it feels like sentiments these characters would actually say. It feels like sentiments writer/director Paul Haggis imposed upon them to make his grand, dull point about racism, when a more telling point about racism might have emerged if he’d just let them be. “Crash” is like a Creative Writing 101 demonstration of what not to do as a writer. To the Academy this meant two things: Best screenplay and best picture.
