One can argue that it all boils down to personal satisfaction, but one can argument that the motivation, even if it is personal satisfaction, doesn't really matter. In that sense, charitable giving is a perfect example of "the ends justify the means": a charity gets a sizeable donation no matter what, which is always a good thing.
