A former economics professor at my university, Berhanu Nega, was arrested in Ethiopia in November and is facing charges of treason, which carry the death penalty. He is a member of an opposition party in Ethiopia who accused the government of, among other things, rigging a recent election in Ethiopia. Following the accusations were several days of violent protest, which Dr. Nega is accused of inciting. He and other opposition leaders were quickly arrested and sentenced to death.
Of course, Dr. Nega is a peaceful man who gave up a life of comfort in the US to help his people in Ethiopia lead a better life. Now it looks like he might pay with his own life. If you're interested in his story, or the stories of his colleagues, here are some handy links: |
