Yes you can.

My point isn't so much about whether it will or won't be successful, just that IM'ing has become so important that we need a decentralization of IM'ing services. AIM and MSN both suck; they load up their clients with flashy, useless features, while hanging onto the central servers. The IM'ing protocols themselves haven't changed much. Microsoft, for example, is more concerned with allowing users to "shake" IM windows than implement, say, IM encryption.

Jabber, however, is a decentralized protocol, like email. It also easily allows different clients to connect, meaning there's more competition to actually make good clients. Furthermore, next-generation technologies such as encryption are built right in, not just loosely pasted on top; XMMP also allows for features to easily be added. Finally, it's an open protocol, meaning no one company can take control of it.

In the beta of MSN, they have taken out the "nudge" deal. They also put a "shared" folder like in Limewire or something where you're friends can view it and download from you're PC.

I have never used Jabber myself, I will give it a try.
