QUOTE(viola_winnie @ Jan 29 2006, 5:51 AM) Well in the end you will have too. MSN Messenger 7.5 Runs on a different group of servers. When MSN 8.0 comes out the old 7.5 servers will be used for Windows Vista updates. QUOTE(mipadi @ Jan 29 2006, 8:53 AM) (Even though it has some pictures, this seems to make more sense in Technology, so I'm moving it there.) I'm not too impressed. Most of the newer "official" clients are simply trying to jam features into their software without regard for interface design. The same thing was done in AIM Triton. I really like the clean, yet customizable look of a client such as Adium, or even Gaim. I'm hoping that Jabber/Google Talk becomes more popular, especially with the pending interoperability between Google Talk and AIM. Jabber is a much better protocol, since it's a collection of servers, like email, instead of a centralized server; if you don't like the policies of one company, simply switch to another. Secondly, any Jabber-supported client can connect to the Jabber network (and since XMMP is an open protocol, it's not hard to make a Jabber-supported client). In general, it's a much nicer system, and I hope to see it take a foothold. Google is getting sued because of Google Talk, I do not think that it will come to the out to the public any time soon on a big scale. Look at gmail, it took a long time before it was actually offered. And I do not even know if its out of beta yet. Info on lawsuit.[ Google will win in the end, but it will take time before they can get the actual lawsuit said and done. Which, it will take more time for people to realize that they have made a Instant Messaging Program, and it will take even more time for it to become as popular as AIM, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo!. ICQ is a good example of failure in the Instant Messaging area. |

ICQ is a good example of failure in the Instant Messaging area. My point isn't so much about whether it will or won't be successful, just that IM'ing has become so important that we need a decentralization of IM'ing services. AIM and MSN both suck; they load up their clients with flashy, useless features, while hanging onto the central servers. The IM'ing protocols themselves haven't changed much. Microsoft, for example, is more concerned with allowing users to "shake" IM windows than implement, say, IM encryption. Jabber, however, is a decentralized protocol, like email. It also easily allows different clients to connect, meaning there's more competition to actually make good clients. Furthermore, next-generation technologies such as encryption are built right in, not just loosely pasted on top; XMMP also allows for features to easily be added. Finally, it's an open protocol, meaning no one company can take control of it. |
