I think the paradigm shift occurred when Apple unified the desktop computer, laser printer and postscript. Although this change initially only impacted typesetting, it was a radical advance that introduced us to the term desktop publishing.

Additionally, when George Lucas developed the software application to edit Star Wars, it was eventually sold and marketed as Photoshop. As you may well know, Photoshop is the most popular digital imaging software program.

I think these two factors are the reason for the paradigm shift in digital imaging. The downward pressure on price and availibility of these tools has changed traditional roles of photographers, designers and other professionals who utilize digital technology.
