How are (in you own opinion) the top 5 rock bands in the last 50 years or so. I saw 50 years because that is pretty much when rock became more main stream here in america with the "British Invasion" and all. Also its when Rock n Roll really exploded onto the scene.

For me tho beign a heavy rock fan my self i'd say"

1. Lynard Skynard - One of the few bands that made an original apperence at Woodstock and still very popular.

2. The Beatles w/ Eric Clapton - Clapton and Harrison where childhood friends and wrote some of the best song ever (While My Guitar Gently Weeps) with Clapton of the guitars

3. Metallica - Not the first but certianly the ones to prefect Heavy Rock. These guys paved the way for many bands we have today that ppl enjoy.

4. Jimi Hendrix - Not one of my personal Favorites but i do like some of his stuff and respect him for creating much of the first sound of electric Distortion from a guitar and making it music. Heavy Rock and many other styles wouldnt be here with out him.

5. Disdurbed - The heavy Rock Band of the new century. They have followed the path of some of the greats before them to bring a new sound to new generations of rockers. With sounds much like those of Panthera, Metallica, Black Sabith and many others. They are newest great rock bands of the ages.

Not a comprehensive list, but here are a few that come to my mind immediately:
  • The Pixies: If you're unsure of their importance, just look at the number of bands who list The Pixies as an inspiration. Much of the rock music of the 90s is a descendent of the sound pioneered by The Pixies.
  • Nirvana: Like 'em or hate 'em, they jumpstarted a whole genre, and set the tone of rock music for most of the 90s.
  • The Beatles: Influential in setting the tone of music for an entire generation.
Obviously not a complete list, but it's a start.
