Hackers get a bad reputation, primarily because the term is applied incorrectly. A hacker is just a person who exhibits the spirit of learning about computers. They don't do things malicious. A cracker, on the other hand, is one who hacks for malicious intent.

According to Merriam Webster a Hacker is someone who illegally gains access and sometimes tampers with computers or information therein.

And Wikipedia is quoted as, "In computer security, hacker translates to a person able to exploit a system or gain unauthorized access through skill and tactics."

Anyway, Ive never had problems with hackers, through my journals, AIM, or otherwise.

Nah, you gotta go back in time, to when the term was coined. It's been manipulated by the media, but at its hard, a hacker is just someone who creates and/or modifies software or hardware. The term "cracker" is the preferred term for a malicious hacker. I'm not sure what you quoted from Wikipedia, because Wikipedia's "Hacker" article begins, "Hacker is a term used to describe people who create and modify computer software and computer hardware."[1]
