I think singing can be pretty overrated. Music is supposed to make people happy, and if singing in the shower in twenty different keys makes someone happy, then leave him be. :P It always makes me smile when I pass people on the highway and they're so completely lost in their own little world that they don't realize everyone can see them rocking out to whatever's on their radio.
Good singing can be defined as the ability to stay within the desired key and hit close to exact frequencies at close to exact moments. Not everyone can do this. My dad used to hold me in his lap and we'd sing together all the time when I was little. Although it may seem to me that singing comes naturally, I have to keep remembering that if it wasn't for him I'd probably have no musical abilities whatsoever. I'm 18 now, and I've been doing this ever since I learned that my throat made weird sounds upon my command. So. Because of this, I won't say that singing is a 'gift'. Although it does seem to run in a lot of families, it probably isn't genetics as much as the way the kid was raised. I sucked at playing the flute when I first started, but six years later I somehow struggled all the way to state. Practice makes perfect. ![]() |
