I wrote this a long time ago for my best friend. It's important to me now, because I think she is about to commit suicide and I can't do anything about it.

The Cusp of a Coffee Cup

We leached the cappuccino until I was half-full.

Our bellies are bloated with still-born children.

I couldn’t possibly understand anything more than I comprehend.

But you took me to the straight and narrow.

Somewhere our melody rings, with a broken unfinished rhythm.

The drums pound with only half-sound as you finish up your cake.

And stuff it in your mouth; go on— I’ll wait.

My mother begs me to take caution, but she is away.

And I am a mother, and you are a mother and we will name our children as such.

You are too young and I am too old to bring our fates to a circle.

I have left you to finish the story, for I have finally jerked the clutch.

I’ll leave you a pen with mercury ink, and you’ll set out for such a task.

But have I not begged for you to return to me?

Have I not bleated with a solemn repose?

What haste has made you leave on the wings of a sparrow?

We latched onto each other with unmanned and untamed hearts.

I tried to lead you the straight and narrow but you fled with a trembling manner.

But we are all mothers and we will name our children as such.

My desperate heart is far too weak to run for you this long.
