I have a winter formal comming up, and yeah I suppose it is a bit early to be thinking about what to wear but I am a busy busy girl |

Depends how formal your formal is. A coctail dress is usually semi-formal, but would probably pass at your thing. If your winter formal is traditionally very formal (ie. guys all in tuxes, and girls in gowns) then I would suggest you do that, but if not, then a cocktail dress is perfectly fine. I would say that since it's a winter formal and not a winter semi-formal, nothing above mid thigh.
