Does anyone participate in any distributed computing projects?

A distributed computing project harnesses the power of computers worldwide to solve a single problem.

Probably the most famous is the SETI@Home project, which analyzes radio signals for signs of intelligent life in the universe. If you do join and life a signal is found, you will be credited with the find (and probably be famous)

A recent one was the Lycos "Make Love Not Spam" screen saver, which used idle processor power to attack spammer websites.

I'm letting my idle computer power go to use by joining the Seventeen or Bust project, which finds prime numbers in the Sierpinski Problem. If you find a prime number, you will be credited (maybe even be famous?)

If you're interested, get on google and search for the URLs for "distributed computing projects" (i think it's distributedcomputing.info, but i'm not sure) for a list of projects.

If you want to join Seventeen or Bust, it'd be great if you joined US-Distributed (the team I'm currently on) if you're in the US (if you're in another country, i guess you want to join that country's efforts, I know Russia and Netherlands have their own team).

Well Good luck, and hopefully you'll consider joining a distributed computing project.

I used to participate in the United Devices-IBM distributed computing project, which had something to do with cancer. But I prefer to place my computer on standby when I'm not using it for long periods of time (much less energy consumption, and my way of saving the planet), so I don't participate anymore.

Wow, old topic.

Yeah, I stopped seventeen or bust when they found another prime.
