I live in Oklahoma and so I don't have the southern accent going. I still say "route" like "root" and I don't say "turr" for "tour" and I just speak normal. The Okies say I have a funny Pennsylvania accent and I talk too fast. And I say funny Pennsylvania things like "go get that awhile"... I've never said "outen the lights."
My problem is that I pick up the accents of people I talk to. I came to Oklahoma for camp when I still lived in PA, and talked with a lot of people from Texas who had SERIOUS texan accents, but at the same time there was a group from Saskatchewan, Canada, and so I also picked up the whole "eh?" thing. I came back to pennsylvania speaking Texan with canadian "eh"s, and people wondered where I really went ![]() |
