I wrote a paper once on how Roman art and architecture was designed around the themes presented in 1984 for an art history class. It was probably my finest work ever.
1984 is one of my favorite books. I read it in seventh grade for a book report, and I've read it several times since then. There are really a lot of themes, from constant surveillance to government oppression to libertarianism, that can be found in the world of today. It's one of the few things I have read as part of school projects that still has some relevance today. As a former political science student, I've spent a lot of time drawing parallels between real-world politics and those presented in 1984. The concept of a never-ending war, as presented in 1984, also has some bearing on world events of today (such as the "war on terror") which makes it easy to draw parallels between fact and fiction. Overall it's a decent read; heavy if you really get into trying to understand the concepts presented in the book, but in the end, it's probably worth it, because much of the book is relevant today. |
