^ again let me say..EXA-CE-TU-LLY! One of the points of being emo is to show the darker side. I mean that person who said emos try to comform themselves... who are you to talk when you don't even talk or understand them?

Of course I'd think that. ANYONE would assume that if you keep attacking emos and saying how they always try to comform from other people. As another emo I wear eye liner for a reason, I wear black attires for a reason, I am depressed for a reason and it's not to act different but because for once in my life I feel free from a cage I lived my whole life. I bet other guys that wear eye liner have a good reason to it and you don't have a right to doubt them.

I have been around emo a lot--long before it was cool to "be emo". I've played in several emo bands, and have had a number of friends that have played in emo bands, long before emo was popular. I've been around it long enough to know that emo isn't lining your eyes in black and saying "Woe is me, woe is me, the world is such a bad place and my life sucks" and going to great lengths to draw attention to this fact, like the bastardization of emo is today. Go back in time ten, fifteen years ago--emo artists didn't wear black eyeliner and bitch and moan. That's not what emo is about, and yes, I think anyone who painstakingly tries to conform to that "standard" is just trying to fit in by not fitting in to mainstream culture.

Don't give me this shit that "I'm emo because I'm depressed" because a) emo isn't about being depressed and mopey all the time and b) it's a disservice to people who truly do suffer from depression.

Like I said there are many reasons why I am emo but seriously if you are emo yourself then why do you doubt them so much? I can understand if emos wear eye liner that's a normal thing but preppy guys that wear eye liner are obviously something. And I know what emo isn't about ... the outside is just the first layer. If you do understand then try to understand me. Seriously, guys can wear eye liner if they want. It doesn't matter. It doesn't give us college degrees nor does it gets us fired from our jobs. It doesn't affect us significantly. And I don't think you implied this or anything but i hate it when people say that I don't suffer from depression or anything cuz it's like saying they know what I go through.

I'm not emo. I played in a few emo bands. I like some emo music. But I didn't let myself get absorbed by the culture, because frankly, the culture didn't even exist until recently. Up until a few years ago, emo was just a genre of music. Then some executive found he could market emo to the masses as a trend.

I'm not saying guys can't wear eyeliner if they want. I'm not saying I'd make fun of some guy wearing eyeliner. I'm not even saying I wouldn't be friends with such a person. But the original poster asked for opinions, and my opinion is that it is stupid, not good looking, ridiculous, and an attempt to appear more "scene" or "non-comformist".
