hilighting black hair, help? Options

i have black hair and i want light brown hilights..i bought one of those self-hilighting kits that comes in a box but that didn`t work my mom was pissed off cuz i wasted 10 bucks lol well anyway after i rinsed my hair all you could see was only a little brown but only when you`re standing in the sun most of my friends that got it done had it done by a professional..i only have $15 now and i really want to get it done before school starts..do you girls know any product that actually works on black hair and where can you buy it?? What I did was this:
I went to Target and got a blonde colored dye. When you get blonde dye and dye your black hair, it is a darker blonde, which results in a goldish-brown color.
So.. I recommend you go and get a blonde dye, then go to a beauty supply store and get a highlighting brush [its like, five dollars me thinks, but it is worth it, you can highlight your hair any color, and the dye is cheaper than the highlighting kits, so i think you can buy it with fifteen dollars. ] . I think thats your best bet =D
