Fellow cBers,
James (MarchHare2UrAlice), Ruth (Suddenly She), Basick, and I are going to start a sort of cB newspaper. At the moment, we have only simple plans, such as interviewing members and writing cB related articles, but we hope to expand the project with your help. This is a way for you to become more involved with cB in a positive way, other members will surely appreciate your contribution, and you'll be getting extra writing practice. ![]() The "paper" will be posted in the Writing forum. As you all know, the Writing forum is often overlooked and this is one of the ways we hope to bring more attention to it. I know we have many talented writers in cB and I hope you all will consider joining our team! This is only for fun and you will not be an official moderator or anything of the like. Please do not confuse this is a cB hiring thread. If you're interested, please fill out this application and post it in this thread. Can we still apply for this? It sounds like fun.

I've long enjoyed writing, and am especially interested in journalism (particularly op-ed). I've long been involved with various student publications and feel that it would be great to help with the cB newspaper, as well as bring more attention to the writing forum. I'm a (somewhat) accomplished short story writer, as well as columnist for various newspapers, and I've always enjoyed writing quite a bit. I feel I could bring a fresh, honest perspective to the cB newspaper. Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really reporter material? Write a short (quarter page to half page OR 6-8 sentences) story on a topic of your choice. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic. Here's a short piece I wrote as a review for Kings of Leon's new album: Kings of Leon brings fresh sound to rock Lately I've been weary of modern rock music, which seems to only reward those who are good at mimicking other earth-shattering bands. With a lot of bands sounding like clone copies of one another, I was a bit apprehensive when I first listened to Kings of Leon's just-released second album "Aha Shake Heartbreak." My apprehension was completely unwarranted. Kings of Leon turned out to be one of the best new bands I've heard in quite a long time. They have an uncanny knack of seemingly combining elements of many classic bands into a brand-new sound. Listening to this album, I was able to pick out pieces of The Strokes and The Vines in the guitar riffs, the melodic rock leads of Modest Mouse, the spunk and fast pace of The Toadies, and even the fun and humor of The Presidents of the United States of America. Of course, I hesitate to even list these "sources," as I wouldn't want one to get the idea that Kings of Leon are just ripping off the best parts of contemporary rock hits. It's clear to me that many of these bands are most likely not influences of Kings of Leon, even though I quickly noted some resemblance to parts of their music. No, Kings of Leon clearly deserves more credit than that; they are an original band with a new and unique sound, even though their music relates easily to that of other musicians. They not only have excellent rhythm guitar riffs, but unique lead guitar and bass lines that combine with toe-tapping lyrics to shape the overall sound into something that isn't often heard in modern rock music. One of the greatest things about Kings of Leon is the diversity of their music. "Razz," for example, features a light, melodic bass intro coupled with a clean, melodic lead guitar riff that could almost be described as whimsical. "King of the Rodeo," the album's second track, features the rhythmic vocals of Caleb Followill telling the listener to "Let the good times roll / Let the good times roll." Soft acoustic guitar strumming of "Day Old Blues" sets a melancholic yet relaxing tone. "Aha Shake Heartbreak" is an album that manages to deliver a wide range of music that still manages to tie together into a single defining style. Overall the record has a very melodic, relaxing feel that at times seems to invoke ideas of the 1970s or early 80s, yet still falls into the category of traditional rock music. While unique, the album is not so revolutionary that the listener won't be able to recognize it as music they know and love. The only downside I can find in Kings of Leon's music is that the lead singer's voice is almost as annoying as Billy Corgan's, but like the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, somehow that voice moves from annoying to pleasantly unique in the context of the rest of the band's music. I highly recommend that anyone interested in a unique band with a new sound not easily copied by other bands check out Kings of Leon's album "Aha Shake Hearbreak." I can assure you that any fan of modern rock will not be disappointed by this southern rock band. |
