Ever Gotten A Promise Ring?, ? Options

my boyfriend is really romantic and we've been going out for 5 months and always gets me stuff [spoiled] and for my birthday yesterday he got a $85 ring and he said it was a promise ring. he got me a $30 ring with my birthstone in it saying it was a promise ring a long time ago.

how do you take promise rings? have you ever gotten one? if so how did it end up.. if you broke up did you keep it [since i'm sure they are normally expensive]?

I'm getting my boyfriend a promise ring for our 6 month, and he's mentioned getting me one, but he's been a little strapped for cash recently, so I understand if it takes him awhile.

The one I'm getting him is only $45 because I don't think the cost is important. Currently he wears a 25 cent plastic ring from one of those machines. And I wear a cheap TOTALLY fake pink diamond Claire's ring.

That's just our style .

The ring I'm getting him is actually called a poesy ring and it's a replica of some 16th/17th century ring:



(It's the silver one) The inscription is in French (Vous et nul Autre) and says "You and No Other".

Oh, and in response to this:

i always thought promise rings meant that your boyfriend will promise to marry you and that ring is just something to take it's place before he gets you your engagement ring...or something like that. i never heard that it meant your boyfriend will never date your ex.

It doesn't necessarily mean you'll get married just that you will be faithful and that you do intend on being together forever. It has nothing to do with not dating an ex, specifically. Just that you won't date ANYONE else besides your boyfriend.
