brush effect help please., i m having trouble |

Hi, I am having trouble adding special effects to brushes... I dont know how to make it darker, or you know, effects...i tried the layer options, but it only changes the layer, can anyone help me please?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b304/funkydvel/bg98xi.png this picture has tons of effects, (especially the swirls) so can anyone please tell me how to do that? i m really new to this, and o yea, my program is adobe photoshop 5.0

It might help if you did take it OUT of greyscale.
