"The Opteron is paying off. According to Mercury Research, AMD's Opteron managed to climb up to 11.1 percent of x86 server CPU sales in the second quarter of this year. The previous quarter, which was not weak by AMD's standards, was 7.4 percent. It's not a coincidence that Intel is pushing hard to get the dual-core Xeons out the door before the close of 2005. Originally, they were scheduled as late as 2Q 2006, but the momentum behind the Opteron is nothing to scoff at, and Intel knows it. Rumor on the street is that there's more than one OEM out there worried about gains made by the Opteron. For Intel-only shops such as Dell, it's tough to see one cut out of a tenth of the market.
"And let's keep in mind that, for the most part, AMD is new to the server arena. The Opteron was AMD's first server/workstation CPU, and in just two and half years, they've gone from effectively zero percent up to 11 percent. "Looking ahead, Opteron's future is bright, if not a little strange. Sun's executive vice president of the scalable systems told reporters that the company is going to work with AMD on Opteron development, but so far no specifics have been mentioned. Sun certainly is a forerunner in championing the Opteron, and the company obvious has extensive CPU design experience themselves." [1] Again, I note that Intel might have more market share, but more market share != better. And, as noted, the Opteron's market share is steadily climbing. Part of Intel's success is due to the fact that is has more leverage in the marketplace, but that could change, and it is not a good indicator of what is technologically better, just what can be marketed better. |
