Ok I searched of course and I didnt find anything on this, so.....
Do you consider yourself white washed? 1. Whitewashed To be assimilated into the N.A society, forgetting your own language and culture and tries to act like a white person to gain acceptance. Looked down upon both of the cultures he/she supposedly belongs in. 2. whitewashed When a person who isn't white forgets their culture and acts like a white person. Billy: I'm moving to Texas. Sally: I hope you don't get whitewashed http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=whitewashed I had an interesting conversion about this with a friend (who is black) that considers herself "whitewashed" and then that got me thinking so I did a little research on it. |

QUOTE(AkaRyux @ Jul 24 2005, 8:24 PM) I'm whitewashed completely, but I don't do it for attention. I was born in the USA; how do you expect me to speak Vietnamese and know about my culture? I don't even go by the same religion as most Vietnamese (Buddhism). I'm whitewashed and proud, I guess. I'd rather be white than asian and I don't really have any asian pride. ![]() Well I was born in Canada, lived in Vegas for 9 years... QUOTE(barelyy_coherent @ Jul 24 2005, 10:09 PM) In some subtle ways, yes, but that's only from living in North America for 13 years. But most people I know (including myself) consider myself not to be whitewashed, especially when I live in a place where something like 50% of the population is Asian. I celebrate all the Chinese holidays, I speak the language, I watch the TV, I listen to the music, and if Canada were up against China/Hong Kong in some Olympic event, you bet I'd root for the Chinese team. Me too...I do celebrate Chinese holidays (around the house, Chinese New Year is way more important), I watch Chinese (Hong Kong..TVB) dramas, but then, I wouldn't know who to root for because I'm from Canada too =P. My culture is really both, and split halfway. Sometimes in my thoughts, it would be in Cantonese, sometimes it would be in English. I love Chinese music way more, I love American and Chinese food. I celebrate both holidays. I watch American movies, but Chinese series. When I speak Cantonese to my mother sometimes, a few English words pop up. Sometimes when I speak English too, I'd think of better words to describe a situation in Cantonese. One thing is probably the fact that I can't write chinese (at least I can write my own name). I can read a LITTLE bit, like enough to know a few in everything, but not enough to read sentences. You see...I'm both, exactly. |
