I was kind of surprised that the company admits doing this, but representatives insist that giving customers repaired or refurbished parts is a common practice for hardware manufacturers.

I find that surprising because like...it's Apple. And Apple is really expensive, I always thought they would just give you a new iPod if you sent it in for battery replacement.

It does say "replace your iPod." But neither this page nor others (like the guide to iPod battery replacement) that I scanned on Apple's site mentions that you might receive a refurbished or repaired iPod.

I never knew Apple was so sneaky.

Apple ranks highest in their customer service. If you have problems, and you're still under their warranty, walk into any Apple store, have them take a look at it, and they'll replace it(granted it's damaged, of course) with, yes, a refurbished iPod. The first post is right, a lot of companies do replace their products with refurbished items. Digital cameras are one example... you just have to read the fine print everywhere else.

i'm going to have to disagree with that.

apple does not rank the highest in thier customer service.

now, i'm not trying to start a war; i only know about iriver's customer service, so that's why i'm going to talk about it:

iriver: call them. tell them your problem (it can be something as small as you hear pops in the music, or that the supplied case scratched the player. )
now; once you tell them your problem, you print something out, and then send your player (only the player) to them, and you get a new, boxed player. if your player is discontinued, they will ship you the replacement. if there is no replacement, they ship you the model with the closest features, and is more expensive than your model.

sure; apple's customer service may be good, but that doesn't warrent saying they rank the highest. other companies rate higher.

oh yea, and for legitment problems, they honor the warrenty well outside the one year. for free.
