QUOTE(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=popular) pop·u·lar adj. (p Forgive me if this finds you as stupid or pointless, but I'm still unclear on this issue. What exactly constitutes popularity on createBlog? According to dictionary.com, isn't it supposed to mean well-liked? Appreciated? How is it, then, that apparently some of the "popular" members are rather disliked, perhaps not by the members who regularly pop up here, but by the newer members? Or even, the "popular" members that are most abominable but liked by the mods? Is that what makes these elitists popular? Who exactly is considered popular?
p y -l r)1. Widely liked or appreciated: a popular resort. 2. Liked by acquaintances; sought after for company: “Beware of over-great pleasure in being popular or even beloved” (Margaret Fuller). 3. Of, representing, or carried on by the people at large: the popular vote. 4. Fit for, adapted to, or reflecting the taste of the people at large: popular entertainment; popular science. 5. Accepted by or prevalent among the people in general: a popular misunderstanding of the issue. 6. Suited to or within the means of ordinary people: popular prices. 7. Originating among the people: popular legend. |

First, the English language is a wonder with its diversity. One simple word can be defined with published dictionaries as well as by an understanding between people, or jargon.
Now then, according to Pop Culture, popularity doesn't necessarily mean being well-liked by a majority. Remember that in teenage movies like "Mean Girls", being popular had nothing to do with being liked or appreciated in any way. The third, the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh definition provided by dictionary.com fits what Pop Culture has to say about popluarity. Dictionary.com also list "famous", "well-known" and "fashionable" as synonyms for the word popular. I do not think that one must be well-liked to become well-known. Being well-known is a condition for popularity, wouldn't you all agree? However, being appreciated while be well-known is a plus, and perhaps, preferred. The again, maybe the majority of cB like notoriety, and often refers to those who exert it as popular? |
