should i give up?, or stay liking him? Options

Well here's how it starts off, I started to like this guy in my drama class sometime after we spend a day at a drama theater. I told him to tell him I like him and she agreed she'd talk to him about it and ask if he felt the same. She came back to me with good news and bad. He hesitated to tell her anything after she told him that I liked him. Finally he said "well. . .i like her too." Then he walked away. My friend went up to him and asked what was wrong. He took a long time to answer. until his friend came up and said "HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND!" He nodded and looked down to the floor. So I still like him til this day and I'm not sure if I should give up on him or not cause it's not really good if I like someone who's already taken. But the thing is eversince I liked him I've been paying attention in my toughest subjects, my grades have shot up, I now study each night before a test, and I'm doing so much better. I really wanna become smart so I could impress him ^^;; yeah, if I didn't like him i wouldn't give a flying hoot what I got on a grade.

So I don't know what should I do? Give it all up or stay liking him.

Since what I'm gonna talk about relates to this entry that I made I'm going to post it here to save space. Today I found out that there's no chance of him and his girlfriend breaking up, yet I'm still going for him. I mean my grades are still high, and i like him very much. My friend asked him what he's gonna do and he said that he didn't know but said that he "loved her very much"

Perhaps it's time to find someone else, or just wait? I wouldn't want to regret my mistake later on in life.
