So here I am, basically a newbie to this forum, although I post on several other forums and have done so for some considerable time.
Even though I have only been on here for a few days, I have already fallen foul of some of the 'Keepers of Good English' brigade who have flamed me for using textspeak, which is what most people here in the UK tend to use. Now, I'm not bothered by sarcastic responses, but I do take offense to 14-16yo kids patronising me, telling me to learn how to spell. How lame is that. ![]() Many people, even adults have terrible problems with spelling, not me by any means, but to have these spelling Nazis trying to appear to be so superior is just pathetic and does not give me respect for them. ![]() It appears that textspeak is regarded as only suitable for the kiddie pre-teens/dunces and that everybody else must conform by spelling correctly and posting using the correct syntax. otherwise to face flaming and have their actual post content ignored. The CB Head Honcho should have an obvious edict about this. If there is one, its not very obvious as I (briefly) read through CB rules on posting as every forum is different. But I have no problem with posting in 'Correct English' and will do so for this forum as it is appropriate. sO wAt U FiNK BouT dIs 1 Cb lololol ![]() |

Sorry, but I just take it as if the person is trying to be quote-unquote ghetto if they use "textspeak." I've never heard anyone use that term before, but I understand what you're getting at. Although it does bother me at times, I don't go all out flame-mode just because someone can't type. Rather, I try to contribute an answer to whatever question they're asking, ONLY if what they're asking is coherent. You see, even with "textspeak," what those who use that type of language are still capable of forming coherent messages.
There's a difference between "OoOo sHe WuNnA gHeT DoWnZ N MeEH FiNk iSh LyKe WoAhZ N ShTuFf" (I suck at forming incoherent phrases, sorry) and "He LuV'd MeEh En MeEh BrOkE hIs H34rt. MeEh FeEhL sHo SoWwIe." ^ Even if you don't notice it first, there's a noticeable difference between the first phrase (incoherent, imho) and the second phrase (sound it out and it sounds coherent). I don't mind as long as a certain point is addressed or a certain question is being answered that people can easily contribute to. I'm just tired of people only pointing out that they didn't even read the thing because it was incoherent to them. If they didn't even read it, there's not much use in posting. It's not going to change anything. I even had to close a topic a few days ago because there were 10 replies saying virtually the same thing (you can't type; I don't understand; I didn't bother to read) The only reason why I it doesn't bother me so (as much), that people type in textspeak, is that I used to type like that back in 6th and 7th grade (4-5 years ago). I'm capable of understand what those who type in textspeak are trying to say. I find it rude when someone has a major problem and all someone can say is "Sheesh, learn to spell" or "learn to type" or "I didn't bother reading because everything you said was stupid." I'm not pointing any fingers, but I've seen this happen before. Actually, not just on createBlog, but it's happen a number of times on cB. Doesn't bother me that much--as long as they're not breaking the rules (such as spamming and flaming). Although it should be enforced, people are entitled to their own internet lingo. Even if it is annoying to others, it's not something that could be easily stopped. |
