At my high school, you had to take at least two years of a foreign language in order to get a special certification from the state so that you could attend state colleges. All the state colleges in my home state prefer students that have taken at least 2 years of foreign language and some even require that you take at least two or more years of one before they'll accept you.

I took my two years of Spanish, I speak a bit but not enough to hold a convo. Would've taken three but I got booted from Spanish 3 for arguing with the teacher. I know bits of German and Norwegian from the music I listen to, and I learned a bit of Portugese from an internet friend.

I don't think that Spanish will replace English in the US any time soon. I DO think that it is necessary for all citizens to have at least a basic command of Spanish so that they can communicate with the community of Spanish-speaking peoples. Most other countries in the world require their students to study English in addition to their native tongue from the start. I think that if Spanish classes were implemented at the elementary level in public schools, that children would be better able to learn and master the language. My youngest niece, who's in second grade, starting learning Spanish last year and now has about a 100 word vocabulary.

As far as middle and high school Spanish and other foreign language courses, I don't think that they do a whole lot of good unless the students have been taking them all along throughout their education. All most people really get out of high school courses is the basics, like numbers, letter, colors, and few common words. Commnuicating effectively with non-Americans is a common problem for those of us who were born and raised in the good ol' US of A.
