It has to be painful, messy and smelly. All you have to do is have a nice shower together before which is relaxing. Girls lubricate in the same way whether on their period or not, but if you're worried then use some KY jelly. Always use a condom, unless your on the pill. Any staining will only be light, slightly discoloured and from lubrication. If your worried about this, do it from behind or standing, or with a towel down. Then have another shower after and its all good. If you dont shower first then, yep its certainly going to be a bit whiffy and could be a bit messy, not painful though.
