I haven't cut... too much of a wimp I guess. But I've had a point in my life where I've thought about it and actually tried. (Instead I snapped a rubber band on my wrist... I have extremely low pain tolerance!!) But I guess it just takes your mind of your emotional pain while you're focussing on the physical pain. And a lot of girls that I know who do it totally do it for attention!!!
