Hey, Well I had the same problem last year, this is how it was resolved. I was a 9th grader, he was a 10th grader. Our homerooms did a meet and make friends in all grades thing (my school only had two grades last year cause it's new). I mingled with him and we filled out a form thing together about our hobbies and stuff. He began to ask me about my nationality and my intrests and music, and I did the same. We had a nice conversation and after that we always said Hi in the hallways and even hugged and kissed on the cheek
 . Lol, sorry for my ramblings, you basically have to strike up a conversation, preferably try to get some kind of connection from a friend that knows him so he/she can introduce you to him. Goodluck, and open up to him, don't be shy :].
