Oh I did the same thing earlier! You really should read it again if you didn't catch it, but he was a failure (in his mind) because he wanted to be the Catcher in the Rye and stop the children from growing and losing their innoence. He didn't want them to be old and become "phony" so he failed at that. There are examples and if you need then just tell me =].
