He looks at me occasionally in class, and when I catch his eye, he holds it for a little and then looks away. I THINK I might have caught him smiling at me ONCE, but I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

he might. guys are all different. one thing you should never do is get your friends to ask. if you want to know, ask yourself. one turn down can't hurt. i'm sure you'll have many more chances in life. many of us worry too much (i do too i know. lol) but we gotta take chances =)
