what was china's relationship with the U.S during World war 1 and what is china's relationship with the U.S now?

i think it was the 60s (maybe 70s.. it's pre-nixon though) when US signed a treaty with taiwan to protect it in case communist china attacks.. cuz u know how US was into that whole McCarthyism thing.. and becuz taiwan's economy has been so powerful in the past, US was happy and glad to help taiwan out.. but today china's economy is raising so fast, it's impossible for US to ignore them.. and of course kiss their ass.. it's sorta like the whole "keep ur friends close but ur enemies closer" type of thing though.. cuz US doesn't want China to grow too big and supercede US's domination in the global economy..
