(You don't buy a new keyboard)

Dvorak is an alternative keyboard layout different from the normal default QWERTY. (cuz, ya know...the first letters are q,w,e,r,ty..heh)

The QWERTY layout that's on your keyboard now was created when the inventor of the TYPEWRITER needed to make a typewriter keyboard layout. He had it alphabetical, but if you typed 'A' and then 'B', the hammers that hit the paper would jam together. So to prevent that, he made the QWERTY layout.

The QWERTY layout was invented to prevent jams in a typewriter!

Now we have computers, and we're still using QWERTY! Don't you think it's time to switch to a more efficient layout? QWERTY's layout was picked out at random. Dvorak was created by a guy who did extensive research on how people type and which letters we use the most.

Here's some nice facts:

- QWERTY letters were arranged randomly, as long as it didn't make the typewriter jam. Dvorak was created through a lot of research.

- The home row, the row of letters you rest ur fingertips on (asdf..) are only utilized 30% of the time in QWERTY. The other 70% is used reaching for a 'y' or bending down for a 'c'. Dvorak fixes it so the home row is used 70% of the time, so you don't have to move your fingers up or down as much.

- With the enhanced position of the letters, on average people are 20% faster at typing and 50% more accurate.

- Typing in QWERTY causes more finger-stress injuries then Dvorak.

So even though I can sooo see this as propaganda, I feel Dvorak is no doubt better than QWERTY. I converted to Dvorak, and I'm just spreading the info about it.

The final obstacle, really, the main obstacle of getting Dvorak mass-used since the 1900s is because we're so used to QWERTY, we're too lazy to learn Dvorak. So it's YOUR choice if you wanna switch. But atleast I know I type faster, more accurately, and get less muscle pains since switching.

So ummm...enuf of that. If you want to learn more, go to Dvorak.org

(grr don't remove the link! it's not commercial! and it's a link to a better more efficient tmrw!!! but if you must. I understand [of course i understand! i used to be one! haha])

and umm...current dvorak users..ummm..high five? way ta go? *confuzzle*

I'm not about to spend more money on a new keyboard and then relearn to type. I type at 120 wpm+ and I don't get muscle-stretch injuries....I think it's a little bit ridiculous if you do. That just means it's time to get off the computer and get a little daylight. NOT buy yourself a whole new keyboard.

Hmm, that's interesting. But I'm used to the QWERTY keyboard.
Hah, when I first read the title, I thought you were talking about the composer Dvorak..

I read about that somewhere before. Anyway, I'm good enough on QWERTY, and too lazy to relearn.

Yup, that's me. Haha.

My dad once told me about it.

I guess if I need to buy another keyboard, I'll try it out, but I'll probably be more used to my old one.

If you're too lazy to switch, that's pretty dumb, since it would benefit you more in the long run.

I DON'T look at the keyboard when I type, but I did when I was first learning. How are we supposed to know what we are typing if we don't even know which letter goes to which key? Sheesh. I'm just fine with my Qwerty keyboard, thanks. _smile.gif

^You can always re-arrange the letters on your keyboard, did you know that? It may take time, but it's possible.

I know, I just wanted a QWERTY keyboard just in case I couldn't adjust to the DVORAK one.

...I'm not sure, should this go in Technology? _unsure.gif

I've gotten to type really well with QWERTY. Personally I have no interest in learning to type fast all over again.

well, why not forget all the stuff about the layout. i dont know where to find it, but there this awsome keyboard that is basically like a black square and you can stick keys onto it wherever you want, and program each one. its utterly customizable, and expensive as hell. saw it in PC Gamer

No, you'd need to run software to change the mappings too.

The kinesis keyboard is sick.

Moving to Technology

[edit]

Dvorak just one of those things like metric and linux. It's probably better, but people don't want to bother learning new things.

I've thought about switching, but I use a lot of different computers at work, and it's not feasible to switch them all to Dvorak; and if I can't use Dvorak all the time (or almost all the time), I didn't see the point of just using it at home.

thats sounds cool and all, but if they wanna go big with it, they would have to stop all industries from making qwerty keyboards. lol. I mean its hard cause everyone , has or had the same keyboard. and what if someone came over your house. and you had a dvorak, they would take an hour just typing a paragraph.

qwerty is and i guess always will be dominant.

not unless they build a mind keyboard. lol

So I added on to that. I didn't say switching the keys was all you needed to do.

I'm actually trying to learn Dvorak on a whim, just for the sake of knowing it; it takes some getting used to, but it's relatively easy. (I'm still typing QWERTY at the moment, though.)

Also, seeing Hilary's post in this thread made me sad (even though post itself irked me); I miss her.

I attempted to learn the Dvorak layout a while back, but I think it is silly right now. Unless QWERTY actually limits your ability to type, I doubt that changing layouts will give you noticeable enough benefits to be worth learning. As far as not having to buy a new keyboard, unless you dropped big bucks on a Das Keyboard, simply having the wrong buttons on the keyboard is surely bound to mess you up after a while.

Having said all that, I admire that you actually did learn it and are actually using it. It just seems impractical to me, especially considering that QWERTY wont' be leaving in the near future, so your comfort on other systems will be very limited.
