It depends on what brand you use, but hair dyes should be the same on all types of hair. If you're worried about your hair being damaged then dont use anything permanent. I would recommend Dark and Lovely products, Bigen or Soft Sheen n Carson.

Don't worry, no one's gonna tell you to use the search button unless there's already been a couple topics on it.

Definately not. Everyone's hair is different. A dutch person's hair is much different than an asian's person's hair, or an African's hair. African hair is coarser compared to european hair, so it's much harder to dye. You'll probably need to leave the dye in longer, and/or lighten a couple times first. Dying will damage anyone's hair, but since African hair is coarser to begin with, and dying is much more extreme, the effects are much more noticable. Less permanent dyes won't damage as much, but make sure to take care of your hair and keep it well conditioned before and after dying.

[Edit:] Try to use a dye especially for African hair, because most marketed dyes are for european hair.

this summer i had a situation so i know aLL about dying my hair. i was supposed to have dark blond highlights but, it came out purple so then i put a red rinse to make it red but when i got a relaxer it turned a browish/blond color. so then, we put other red rinse in and then when i went to my hairstylist to get it done she put a brown rinse to tone down the red. She told me that yea black people such as myself already do have coarse and dry hair so when you dye your hair it makes it even dryer on top of that and then when you get a relaxer thats 3x more dryness so yea she said that highlights werent for me and until it grows out she's putting rinse on my hair to tone it down...whew i got off topic but w/e

if you really want it done..just get it done by a pro.

i think a darker red or purple would look nice.. but choose whatever you want. Or ask your hair stylist which is good and if your hair is suitable for highlights and how to treat it. If you just buy the store bought one bring a friend and ask opinions . =) And its okay about the searching thing we won't tell you to search.

Go ahead and dye it, but make sure you use shampoo that will keep it hydrated. I know a lot of African Americans that have successfully dyed their hair without too many problems.
