I've noticed that alot more people are trying to be "emo". It kind of makes me mad. They are taking it from being a way of life to a fashion show. They are dressing the way we dress but when you go to talk to them and are like " oh i got tickets to see rise against in concert. they are so swank" they look at you with like 3 questions on their mind. What's swank. Who's rise against. Why are you talking to me? It just makes me mad. Emo is a way of life for some people. It's short for emotional. I am. Depressed and sad all day long. I don't choose to be. I just am.
I just wondered If This Makes anyone else mad or am I alone on this one?

Not only w/ emo with anything. Everyone turns anything into a fashion show.

...Rise Against, Emo? Are you sure? blink.gif
Whatever...
But yea, this emo/scene/electric shit is getting way out of hand.
Some people tell me I dress "emo" but frankly, EEW, it just disgusts me.
& I thought "emo" was just emotion, not a "lifestyle".
Besides, it isn't even a real word.
But hey, you just go on ahead being sad.

Yeah, it gets me mad. And so many people are listening to that kinda music now too. I can't stand it. But as 'MizzAmericaz' was saying, I think a lot of people are doing it just to fit in & such. And as 'Pyrochick' has said, it's getting way out of hand. Everyone is 'emo' now a days.. and dressing 'emo' like.

Oh if i could be happy i'd take it in one second.
It's way way outta hand. I can't even handle it.
It really bugs me when I'll go to the mall and
like buy a cd and "emo kids" are buying brittney
spears. I think everyone has the right to dress
however but Like pyrochick said it is a way of life
not a fashion show.

Emotion's not short for "emotion"; it's short for "emotive hardcore". It's really a genre of music, not a lifestyle. People act all depressed due to the fact that the music is most often sad, but I hardly think it constitutes a lifestyle.

I don't see the difference between a non-emo fan dressing "emo" and an emo fan dressing "emo". Why? Because they're both ridiculous. Record labels of today have pandered and pushed and marketed emo so that it's trendy and readily consumed by the public, resulting in a clothing trend based on the emo musicians.

Now I hate when people say that, "Oh, that emo, that's not really emo, this is emo" and provide a laundry list of examples of what they think is emo, but let's be honest: a lot of today's emo music is vastly different from the emo that sprang out of the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene of the 1980s. Go back to the late 80s and early 90s and take a look at emo bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Texas is the Reason, and Sunny Day Real Estate. Those guys focused on the music, the passion of their words--not their style of hair or dress.

So, to be honest, I don't buy into this whole "I listen to emo so it's okay if I dress that way, but he/she can't because she's not emo" because it's all a bunch of crap. Emo is music, not a lifestyle. In my opinion, anyone who dresses to be "emo" is just ripping off a trend, whether they are a fan or not.

^^ haha. That made me smile.
Personally, i think the "emo trend" sucks and it doesnt even make sense. I mean, like what XtasyHigh said, how can you dress emotionally?
Well, actually it makes no sense to describe anyone's music as "emo" (emotional) cause everyone's music, from country, to rap, to rock, to classical is "emotional". If you aren't writting songs from the heart, then there really isn't any point to be writting in the first place, right?

Anyway..I hope you know that .. "bragging" (for a lack of better term) about your depression is exactly what the kids you're complaining about do. wink.gif

People can dress and wear and listen to and act however they want. That doesn't put them in a category. That's just them. The people aren't pretending to be something they're not, it's just how they wanna be. If they wanna act ridiculous and you don't like it, that's their problem. No sense in complaining about people acting .. like what you're doing. With the labels and such. Just let people be who they wanna be.

Like headphones (I feel like I should know a name, but I don't. Sorry!) said "People can dress and wear and listen to and act however they want." Dressing a certain way does not make you any type of person. It doesn't define the way you live, the way you feel or the person you are.

Nothing is a fashion show until you make it that way yourself. If you didn't look, it wouldn't seem like a fashion show to you. You say that emo is what you are, so why can't you just let those people be who THEY are? Don't judge people like that, because those three questions in your post "What's swank. Who's rise against. Why are you talking to me?" probably isn't running through their heads. It's probably more than the usual "I'm emo. I'm dark and depressed and desperate....Let me show you how emo I am..."

Emo is a genre of music, it's emotively [sp?] charged post punk rock...I think. I'm actually listening to some right now. =P Sunny Day Real Estate. Emo doesn't mean someone is "emotional". It's music and it doesn't matter who listens to it because that's all it is. You've got lots of different people listening to pop and country, we don't happen to care about that now do we?

That's what our youth does, they turn music genres into a stereotype and beat the crap out of it and drag it along day after day. Like the scene kids at the mall, they must be loaded to wear all those Hot Topic clothes everyday.

I don't care how other ppl dress (as long as it's not indecent), and they can call themselves whatever they want to. I have no idea why someone would WANT to be labled emo, and have everyone think they are depressed and what knot, but hey! it's not my problem.

All lables are rediculas, no matter how ppl use them. Everyone is unique, you can't put anyone in a catagory and expect them to fit in perfectly, it's just impossible. That is one of many reasons why lables are stupid.

I listen because I am.
I never use to be but it seems like I hit highschool and it went to hell.
I've changed. I'm never happy. It sucks. I get happy when I see family
or like 2 of my 20 friends. mellow.gif

You poor thing.

I don't mean to sound snippy, but happiness is a choice. There are some people with some real issues of depression, but for most teenagers, you can choose between being mopey and whiny, or being happy with what you have.

That's the most annoying thing about the "emo trend"--people take it as encouragement to be sad (it's not, by the way). Instead of admitting that they just have crappy attitudes, they label themselves as "emo". Furthermore, it masks the fact that there are people out there who truly are depressed and really do need help.

oh no. don't worry.
i don't label myself as "emo".
i say i am b/c my friends tell me i am.
i don't think i'm emo b/c i'm not depressed.
24/7/365. i do have fun sometimes. but rarely.
i've tried to be happy. it's hard when everyone
around you is like you suck and blah blah blah.

Wow, you sound exactly like me. I've never intended to label myself, but people always ask me if I'm goth or depressed or emo and I sure get a lot of shit at school. People either make fun of me or are scared of me. It's like people are mocking us when they wear women's jeans and AC/DC shirts and call themselves emo or depressed. Attention whores...

I think emo is just mainly music but people can do whatever they want so if they feel like they can take the whole "emo" thing into a lifestyle then why not? It's up to them to do what they want with it. It just shows that the music they listen to just really influences them into what they think is right for them at the moment.
