Rich and sad... I'd use the money to buy things to make me happy, or at the very least buy things to keep me busy so I don't have time to think about being sad or happy.

^It doesn't really work that way...

I would most definetly rather be poor and happy. All that matters to me is happiness and love.

Ah, but what if the question means that you can't be happy no matter what, even if you can buy a lot of stuff?

Actually they don't...
Money only buys you materialistic objects so its placating your thirst for happiness if that makes sense

Well, LOL, if you actually took the TIME to read my entire post (which was very short) I said you can be HAPPY AND RICH... both of THOSE TWO. ^_^ The common mistake people make is that rich people are a bunch of depressed looneys who wish they were poor to find some sort of stupid 'satisfaction.' Some rich people work VERY hard to become rich. ^____^ For instance, my mother, who graduated highschool early, went to college as a GIRL, used to be a little teeny-bopper poor farmer who lived off of stringbeans and got beat up by all the bullies, etc. (This was in China, btw)

Poor and happy.
I've already experienced being poor before. Eh..so what? Money comes and goes. You don't need money to go to church, to pray, to educate yourself at a public school, to make friends, to do a lot of things...But true happiness is rare.

Now, my family is pretty well-off money wise. Once again proving that God answers prayers _smile.gif.

so you're saying you can only be happy if you're poor? what she meant when she said both was like a mix of what your choices were. the best of both, happy(w/o poor) and rich(w/o sad).
i think there's no point in being sad and rich. for ex. let's say you were a billionaire and could have anything you wished, but nobody for you to care about or somebody to care about you. would you give all your money up just for a person that means a lot to you, or keep the money and live your life lonely and miserable? happiness should be your first priority, not money. if you care about money more than you must be shallow, imo.

it would depends on what i have to be sad about. i've been poor before, and things like having no place to live, not enough food and not knowing what comes tomorrow to make things even worse do not make people happy. happy from love of family is one thing, but how can you be happy if you can't feed your family?

I prefer to think of Tyler Durden as a bit more enlightened than the rest of us. And I imagine that you've never been incredibly wealthy and had nothing in life…whether it be friends or family…and spent every moment viewing those around you…and knowing, just knowing that they would all stab you in the back for just a tenth of the money you have on your debit card. I haven't either...but that's the only way i can visualize being rich and sad...and I must say, I'd prefer poor...in love and free...much rather than rich isolated and shackled down by $$.

And I don't think you'd have to worry about hunger...we aren't talking that poor...if we were, then happiness would be impossible. Hunger overrides happiness.

Right.... A character from Fight Club is going to know what's it like to beg for food in the street at age 5 and having to watch your kids grow hungry day by day. Hmm, I don't think so.

People always want what they do not have. It's a fact of life. Not liking being rich and sad doesn't mean you're better off being poor and happy and vice versa.

If we're not talking about hunger then how poor and how rich are we talking about?

Not saying that a character from anything would have that sort of insight. However, movies are our current form of literature, and sometimes literature is meant to stir specific concepts within a person. Once again, not saying that Tyler Durden is divinity for christs sakes. Yes yes...Tyler Durden's word is most certainly not gospel. I was just saying that the quote certainly puts a specific concept in mind. Yes, money is important. However, my uncle...was incredibly wealthy...incredibly. We were very close, and he always put on the face that everything was ok...because he had money. He passed away 3 years ago by his own hand. Meanwhile, my aunt on the other side of the family...is very poor. However, her and her family are probably the happiest people i've ever met. They find such simple beauty in everything. A sunrise is as beautiful to them as the most expensive of cars. Call me a hopeless romantic, but i'd much rather just admire beauty and have love...than have 'stuff'.

And by poor...I don't mean struggling for food. I mean in debt...i mean having to pinch penny's to make sure that everyone is fed. Occasionally missing a meal. But, I do agree that if you are so poor that you do not have food...then the level of hunger makes happiness impossible. It's impossible to love or admire beauty...when you have to keep an eye out for the next person who drops a half eaten sandwich on the sidewalk.

People make the best of their life.

The only people who do not have friends are those that do not make an effort to keep friends. Even rich people can have good, honest friends if they make an effort to value the right people. Since we're sharing anecdotes... My best friend comes from a pretty well-off family, an understatement. Her father owns properties—mostly land and one or two business buildings—in Jordan, a vacation house in Hawaii, a few office spaces in downtown Houston that would sell no less than 1 million, and a gas station. Her Mom just inherited a small piece of fertile land in the Phillipines. The wealth is available at her finger tips. She has a good, close-nit group of friends—of all different races—who would do anything to damn anyone who would hurt her. Someone may think, well I'm probably friends with her for benefits. Yes, I do get benefits, the kind we get from good friends: moral support, an honest lending ear and study buddy. She is NOT an unhappy person, just the opposite. She's got a big family. I've never once heard her complain about them, only praises about how her aunts are so talented and her cousins are so funny and intelligent.

Ideally, when people make the best of what they have—tangible and non-tangible—and value them, there's no reason why a person should be miserable.

About the level of wealth and poverty. I was thinking we were talking about extreme opposites. Therefore, if you are "incredibly" wealthy, I should be incredibly poor. That kind of poverty means having problems with finding your meal everyday. But hey, if that's not what you're talking about, then never mind. _smile.gif

Alright, I have a more accurate quote that should sum this up for both sides. :) And it's from someone a little more real than tyler durden…(who happens to not only be a fake character, but a delusion of a fake character…Oo…so perhaps he wasn't the best point of reference.)

It's from Kin Hubbard.

I'm sure that most of you don't know who he is. Kin Hubbard was a popular Indiana humorist who wrote and illustrated the "Abe Martin of Brown County" comic, which appeared on the back page of the Indianapolis News and hundreds and other American newspapers for nearly 30 years. He also collected his sayings into yearly almanacs and other books. He lived 1868 - 1932

Here is the quote.

"It's pretty hard to tell what does bring happiness. Poverty an' wealth have both failed." - Kin Hubbard
