I dunno if this belongs here..but I wasn't sure so I just stuck it here.
I was just wondering how would you knot if you have a cavity? I mean, don't just say "if you have a toothache" because I get occasional pain from my braces. So, does anyone know?

Cavities, are black things on your teeth. Geez, that's common sense.

cavaties aren't black things in your teeth. they are tiny holes in your teeth. Geez, that's common sense.

... If there's a black thing on your tooth, you have a cavity? What kind of common sense is that.

If you feel that it's hurting and when you chew on it there's a sharp pain in your tooth. And if you go to the dentist and they tell you it's a cavity, it's a cavity. wink.gif If it's really that hard to decipher which ache is a cavity or not, you're probably not taking very good care of your teeth.

I have braces and some of my teeth hurt too. But I don't have any cavities.
Before I went to the dentist, around 7 months ago I didn't feel anything and I had like 3 cavities. Just go to the dentist and ask.

common sense? bah...sometime you have to go to the dentist to take rays of your teeth...some cavities are behind your teeth, so you can't really tell by lookin in mirror. Me, my dentist said I have them for forever, lol, but I never know, because I never ever has a toothace,...kinda weird really..I went for a clean and end up with 2 fill xP

Well, sometimes you cannot tell there is a cavity there depending where exactly the cavity is, and the condition of the nerves. Mine were right on the top of the teeth, and I had no pain (the nerve was dead by then), so I did not realize I had a cavity until I showed my mom that I was able to stick a toothpick in my tooth and it wouldn't fall out XD

But yeah. Look for signs of pain in the nerves of the tooth, holes in the teeth, etc. What everyone else said above

If you go to the dentist regularly every 6 months for cleaning, they'll be able to find out if you have any cavaties. And like people said before, if you feel pain or have holes...go to the dentist.

A lot of people have cavities without knowing it, a dentist'll be able to spot them during a check up though

No, that's not right either.

Cavities are holes in your teeth and it may take x-rays or your dentist to spot them. Cavities are treated depending on the extent of decay. Crowns are used when decay is really bad.

If you meant "crown" as in the top of your teeth, that's wrong also. Cavities can be found in between, front, or back of teeth as well as on top (my dentist call them biting grooves).
