replacing website addresses

I have a layout site and I was wondering how to change a link so that it might be a "+" for example

Here's an example

I want to change this:

http://www.xanga.com/diagonal_stripes_test

to this:

<+>

So that when I click the "<+>" it goes to "http://www.xanga.com/diagonal_stripes_test"
