hello kids. just a quick question. when you have a picture of a friend and yourself, what do you caption it as?

"my friend and i at the picnic"
or
"my friend and me at the picnic"

and which one is correct? i thought it was "and me" but it seems as if so many people use "and i" ...right. grammar nazis, help?

edit: Yes, i know that it's "my friend and I" when you're writing a sentence. But i'm talking about picture captions. is it still the same?

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT SENTENCES, I'M TALKING ABOUT PICTURE CAPTIONS

A caption is still a sentence/phrase right? So it still counts.

It's:

My friend and I.

Otherwise... it'd be..

Friend and me.

^^^ "Friend" being a proper noun.

When there's a modifier in front of the subject, there should be an 'I'.

Or so I think... It's been awhile since I thought about it... pinch.gif

It might be the other way around. Someone correct me if you have to.

^No because if it was just you in the picture you wouldn't say "I at the picnic!" You would say "Me at the picnic!" So for a caption like that you would you My friend and me at the picnic...

Being the grammar nerd that I am, I always say "my friend and I".

Bad me. You were talking about captions. THAT would be "my friend and me".

Me at the picnic = My friend and me at the picnic

You would use "me" in both cases.

(for captions)

So wait--so am I right in the end? It would be "Susan and me" for a caption and not "Susan and I" ?

Well, technically, both of them are incorrect since none of those are sentences.

But I think the correct one is "my friend and me at the picnic."

my friend and me at the picnic/me at the picnic
my friend and I at the picnic/I at the picnic

I at the picnic doesn't sound right, now does it?

hm, a lot of you don't seem to get what i'm asking. sorry for not making it clear. I'M TALKING ABOUT PICTURE CAPTIONS, NOT REGULAR SENTENCES.

i hope everybody knows it's "my friend and i went to the picnic." but thats not what i'm asking.

when you're trying to decide if you should use I or me in the sentence remove the other person.

"my friend and I went to the picnic"
if you remove "my friend and" it's still correct

"my friend and me went to the picnic"
when you remove "my friend and" it sounds stupid

would you really say "me went to the picnic"?

too bad i couldn't use that as my reason on my grammar tests, hah

well since its picture captions, if there was a picture of just you, you would say "me", not "i" so therefore you say my friend and "me". or me and my friend, depending which side of the pic you're on.

hmm toughy. i dont really know what i use. my friend and i is correct though, cant explain why because neither work if you do it like i was taught in english...

you take out my friend and see if it makes since

sentence: my friend and i are going to the mall
fixed: i are going to the mall

maybe its just one of those weird english do things

It's "my friend and I".

A good trick to know if it's "I" or "me" is to cancel out whatever's before I/me and say the sentence and see if it makes sense.

For example..."My friend and I/me went to the park". Take out "my friend".
"I went to the park."
"Me went to the park."

Obviously it's I. So it should be "My friend and I went to the park."

But...the bastard that the English language is, there are always exceptions, so be careful. If you have any further doubts, consult your English teacher =]

if it was a caption for a picture, it would My friend and me at the park.. the reason why it is MY FRIEND AND ME is because if you took out the MY FRIEND AND part, than the only word that would make sense woujld be ME. wacko.gif

I'm not talking about sentences; I'm referring to picture captions.

Susan and me at the zoo
me at the zoo

or

Susan and I at the zoo.
I at the zoo

Well most people so far think it's Me, and not I...

"Me and my friend" is wrong.
"My friend and me" is wrong.

It depends on where you and your friend falls in a sentence actually, but I realize this isn't what the topic is about...
