LOTR.
It's a classic.
I mean, it was written like a hundred years ago or something, and people still go crazy over it today.

LOTR,

well, actually it was written by the writer's response to ww(i'm not sure which one) but i think one.

look at the collelations.

tolkien was pulled from his life in the english countryside to war across europe. probably WWI, because of the arival of the elephants ( tanks.). i think the colleration ends here, but you can see how it was based off of having to leave the comforts of home for an adventure.

lord of the rings is the best classic... and i applause peter jackson for making it come to life. he cast all the charaters great, and the filming is exquisite. lord of the rings is the book come to life.

harry potter is just a spinoff of the book. they didn't put that much detail into it. what really sucks it their efforts to make it shorter and PG. it takes out all the fun stuff. and the changing directors, not good. the should also have waited till the 7th one came out and filmed it all at once. it would still take long and the actors would grow, but this is terrrible.

LOTR, all the way. they have a cool shiny ring, and what does harry potter have? an invisiblility cloak. did i mention the shiny ring is indestrucable? what happens when harry tears his cloak?

I don't think Harry Potter is a spinoff of Lord of the Rings at all. I don't really see a connection between them besides the whole wizardry of it and mystical creatures. They're clearly different. I like them both. Although it is obvious that Harry Potter is PG compared to Lord of the Rings.

I don't think you can call Harry Potter a spinoff of Lord of the Rings simply because the only thing they have in common is the whole magical background of it. Honestly, Lord of the Rings is a whole journey, whereas, Harry Potter has a series of adventures...I don't really see how Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are even similar besides that. blink.gif

heh..lotr and harry pottter have a LOT in common! just gonna name some off the top of my head:
both have wizards: gandalf and dumbledore
both have some weerd looking creature who speake in 2nd person: dobby and gollum
both have trolls: you get it
both have hooded people who are scary: dementors and ring wraiths
both have someone who wants to take over the world: sauron, voldemort
scars: scar from when frodo got stabbed on weather top, lightning shaped scar on harry's forehead.
legendary swords: gordric gryffindors sword, the swrod of elendil

oh yeah, and i definetly pick lord of the rings. it has a great plot and the movie is really inspiring and touching. im a huge tolkien fan and i know alot about it. oh yeah, and i love the elves, they'er so pertty and cool. i wish i were an elf. lol anyway, harry potter is okay, i like the books and thats about it.

As I said, this falls into the magical category...both are fantasy, mind you, so of course they're going to have wizards.
QUOTE

Don't you mean third person? Furthermore, look how different they are: one is evil, one is good. One has a split-personality, the other one doesn't. Who's to say they look weird? There's a ton of other creatures in both series that look equall weird.
QUOTE
both have trolls: you get it

Look to my first remark.
QUOTE
both have hooded people who are scary: dementors and ring wraiths

You could look to my first, and also, they're once again so different in being. They certainly have different reasons for being there. Obviously there's going to be a "scary" set of people simply because that's just another element of writing.
QUOTE
both have someone who wants to take over the world: sauron, voldemort

How many other books have people that want to take over the world? They obviously have to have a bad guy, and bad guys always want to take over the world. Furthermore, just look at how different they are with form.
QUOTE
scars: scar from when frodo got stabbed on weather top, lightning shaped scar on harry's forehead.

Um...Harry had that scar when he was born.
QUOTE
legendary swords: gordric gryffindors sword, the swrod of elendil

King Arthur has the excalibur - are you going to call it a Lord of the Rings rip off, too?

The LOTR movies have a lot more action and hotter actors.
The HP books are a more interesting read.

LOTR is more of a 13+ movie. It requires much understanding and thought when listening to characters. You can be easily confused when you ignore what is being said and just watching the action. Harry Potter on the other hand, is almost for all audiences as it includes youngsters. It's probably easier to get than LOTR.

i totally agree. alot of my friends dont like it cuz they dont understand whats going on. reading the book helps yout o understand it more. if you decide to read the book f.y.i its kinda boring in the begining and takes alot of patience but it gets really good.

books first-
lotr may be a classic, but theyre so damn annoying. they just go on and on and on, like in the forest in the hobbit, i thought that part was never going to end. im kind of ashamed because it makes me seem ignorant wanting to read books for plot, but i really didnt like the lotr books much

harry potter however were great. sure they were quick and easy, but nonetheless, great. they may not be original, but nothing is. really.

now movies
lotr made much better movies(and no, not just because of orlando bloom *rolls eyes*) they were very well made and generally excellent, especially when compared to the books

harry potter were not. i guess they were okay, but i didnt really want to see them to begin with, because i thought they might ruin my personal visions of the books, but i was forced to watch them, and they were ok, just not as good as the books.

LOTR.

the third movie of Harry Potter SUCKED ass if you read the book. the third movie wasn't even up to par with the third book. and the third book was my fav. the third movie, they cutted alot of important scenes and HARRY got the firebolt during christmas (in the middle of the book) not the end. OMG the director did a horrible job with the third movie and he doesnt even read HARRY POTTER. _dry.gif _dry.gif mad.gif

LOTR. LOTR has been around much longer and is still popular--why? It's WAY better than HP. LOTR has way much more content than HP. HP is quite exciting, and am a fan of it myself, but you could not possibly try and compare HP to LOTR... shifty.gif

dude...no duh LOTR hahaha. legolas and aragon i just cant resist. lol they're so sexy. they include more entertainment too and a lil bit humor. unlike harry potter even though im a big fan of theirs. hp is just a classical magical movie. barely any humor except for when ron says anything. lol the boring part bout LOTR is that they have a lot of boring talking scenes. i just love the endings and like the battles. they're so good.

For Harry Potter, I like both the books and the movies.
For LOTR, I only like the movies because I'm not interested in the books.

Why do people have to compare them?
I know there are a lot of similarities between them, but I think both are good.

HP and LOTR are both fantasy.
Everything that's fantasy can be related. They're all alike. They all take stuff from each other. In fact, it's difficult now to write a fantasy book that's ORIGINAL. So, saying that they're alike isn't saying much at all.

HP is great in it's own way; it has a different sort of tragedy, a different sort of world...and the books are sending different messages (parental love, value of friendship, etc.)

LOTR is the work of a genius. Tolkien's a genius. Rowling is too, but in a different way. Tolkien's books are, of course, harder to read and understand. There's a reason LOTR's normally in the adult fiction section of a library while HP's in the young adult section. But LOTR is awesome because it has something HP doesn't; a completely different world with its own history, myths, languages, etc. Everything has been made. You could LIVE there if it was real. HP's world is made inside the world we already know, so it's just...different.

I'd hafta say that LOTR is better just because there's so much to it; it's not just about the Ring and Aragorn's background. It's also about the Shire's own battle, the elves' leaving Middle-Earth, and every character's own story.

Oh, and about the movies...LOTR movies are WAY better. HP movies just lacked the spirit of the books; they really did. LotR, while still changing many things, kept a lot of Tolkien's magic in it. HP...I was really disappointed by the movies. Far too rushed, too focused on time issues, etc.

Wow very nice points overall.. adding to that.. LOTR also has a lot more depth and complexity I think.. Tolkien is a genius, did he invent the Elvish language himself?

Most definitely.. the LOTR movies were able to capture and covey Tolkien's genius, whereas the HP movies were disappoingly short... plus they seemd to be ill-fortuned.. didnt they have to get a new Dumbledore every movie cuz something happened to the actor?

I hate to say it, but LOTR bores me. I haven't stayed awake for any of the movies. The only thing I like about them are Orlando Bloom.

I'm a Harry Potter fan, meself. happy.gif Even though they cut out a LOT of stuff from the books in the movies.

Harry Potter <3

I'm still trying to figure out how Harry Potter is called a rip off of LOTR.....

Both are good, but I'm not a big fan of the LOTR books, only the movies. Plus, I've been a HP fan for a very very very long time.

LOTR was made for an older audience and HP for a younger one.
So obviously, there's more in LOTR.

harry potter and lord of things are both adventurous and have both action... but i prefer harry potter more cus it's exciting. lord of things movie is ok too...sigh no argument for this one cus they are actually both good and exciting to watch. since lord of the ring is over, i love harry potter now

Yeah I still like Harry Potter. The reasons are is that there is more sequel than Lord of the Rings. I love sequel movies as long as it's a great story in every sequel and great endings. Also Harry Potter is like a wizard movie and I love wizard type movies. Also it has to do with mysteries and adventerous. Well they are both like that. But Harry Potter is much better.
