I was flipping through Seventeen Magazine when I got to the advertising page. I found an ad for Barbizon Modeling & Acting Centers, and on a whim, I figured I would go to their site. So I went there, and they had a 'contact us' section. I went to the Barbizon Houston site, and I contacted them. I have no professional modeling/acting experience, I definetely don't have model looks, and I'm not very much into clothing or fashion. I emphasized my willingness to try new things and meet new people rather than my looks. If they call me back and I set up an interview with them, I have a very strange feeling I might get turned down because of my looks. But I don't know, though. I think it would be fun and all. What do you guys think?

I can't give you an accurate opinion considering I don't even know what you look like, so I'm going to say GO FOR IT! If they turn you down because they think you're ugly, who cares? Modeling isn't that big a deal and if a modeling agency is going to turn you down just like that and not give you a chance, should you cry over it? No, they weren't worth your time. I've considered modeling before and I think it's a really great idea. Good luck.

in a way thats true and not true. I went to barbizon, and I loved barbizon. THey actually teach you a lot, and they are accosiated with model agencies, so if you are good, they will help you get a carreer. On the other hand, they will take anyone that pays. Heres the issue. It is against the law to have a modeling achool and an agency owned by the same company. Because then yuo would be teaching people who can pay to do EXACTLY what you want to do, and then no on outside could get in. But, barbizon and DMG (the agency they work with in texas) arent owned by the same company, persay. They just work directly together. So they are doing basically the same thing, but its legal. So, they bring in girls from everywhere. From the mall, from magazines, from the internet, use former models and students of the agency and barbizon grads or whatever, have them come in a teach you things, and see who has the look. They have 2 fashion shows a year, which reps from their agency come to find people, plus they tend to pop in unexpectedly from time to time as well. So you really do have a chance. When I went to barbizon, I spoke with some reps about doing plus size modeling, but theres no way in hell I'm every doing plus size (plus size is size 8 and up btw) cuz thats an insult, so I said screw it. But even if you dont want to be discovered, if you have the money, go for it. It gives you so much training, not just in being a model, but in having confidence, in how to dress, and how to look your best. It also looks great on a resume. So I say when they call you back (and they will) go for it. Its a lot of fun.

:O I never heard of it, but I think if it's barely legal it's not worth it. You should go for the interview but when they start asking for money, I think you should "flip the bitch switch." Eh, I've been watching last season's Surreal Life.

well if you've seen america's next top model, lots of the girls that make the finals aren't exactly the prettiest, but like.. personality and drive and stuff is important too. but just in case, you might want to get your hair done, and maybe makeup

Well, I don't know. I mean, after looking around, John Roberts Powers looks a LOT more credible.

They kept calling me, and when I finally got an interview, they said I needed to drop 5 lbs. sad.gif

EDIT //

Actually, I think it was another modeling agency, not Barbizon.

biggrin.gif I just wanted to say something nice about Barbizon. Before I started, I never had much self esteem or confidence. I now realize that I have always had my beauty on the inside and out, and Barbizon helped me see that. biggrin.gif I never learned how to put on makeup until I went to Barbizon. You should try it. I made so many friends there. _smile.gif

I went to Barbizon a long time ago. It was an interesting experience, but I got tired of it really quickly. I hated waking up early on Saturdays & having to do all the work that was required of us. I just wasn't into that whole modelling thing. My main reason for going was to correct my posture.

At least Barbozian is a real agency type thing, a lot are scams, so be careful, and as a general rule, don't fork over more than like $100 right off. It's understandable for them to ask for some fees, and pay for classes but if it seems even a LITTLE suspicious, get out, and get out fast.

actually..thats how the business works. most of the time you have to pay for classes and stuff.
barbizon is pretty well known in the modeling/acting business so i dont think you ahve to worry about it being a scam, but those schools arent agencies so you wont get work by just taking classes, so dont expect much unless your willing to go out there and meet agents and managers. ive been through this stuff so trust me.

First off, thank you for all you Barbizon supporters. If you're not %100 sure of what you're talking about, don't say anything at all. I speak the truth because I know it. I was a student and then a teacher at Barbizon, and I totally back them. Not everybody is going to be the next Naomi or Gemma, but everybody does have the opportunity to succeed. (think Danny Devito, who the hell would've thought he would ever be successful in the entertainment biz) Barbizon, as well as life, is all about what you make it. Sure it might cost you, or your parents some $ along the way, but if it's something you truly want, go for it. Everyone gets something different out of the experience. It depends on the teacher you end up with and the type of person you are. It's not for everybody, but don't knock it it til you try it.
