i actually looked forward to it (well, as much as i can look forward to going to school) because i was sick as hell of middle school. but the older kids weren't scary at all, and after the first 2 days the school wasnt as big and confusing as i thought. its actually really well organized compared to most

i actually missed my first day of high school because i was really sick. incidentally, that was the only day i missed all year

Simple:

Do you work. Study.
Don't halfass things and cut corners.
Don't get caught up in a clique.
Don't let a relationship cloud your judgement.
Don't do drugs.
Don't drink.
Do talk to your teachers.
Do get involved.
Do bust your ass for 4 years.

Trust me.

Our school is actually having what they call a "freshmen academy" where the freshmen will have a part of the school just for them with their own cafeteria and what not.

They are basically being separated from the upperclassmen. Which I find to be ridiculous because they still have to leave that part of the building to attend their elective classes where they will most likely have to deal with upperclassmen anyhow. My brother is going to be a freshmen so in a way it's at his advantage because they will have a little cult of freshies where they can all be together and learn the basics.

Just tell everyone that you are a sophomore.. everything will be fine happy.gif

my school actually has freshman acadamy too, but they only started it last year, so i wasnt involved, and i wouldnt have been anyway since its not for everyone- mainly those in cp and some honors classes, and since im in gifted and honors (and now ap and ib) i wouldnt have been included

i dont know much about it, but a lot of their classes are located closer together than everyone else's, and next year theres going to be a freshman acadamy pod where most of the classes are. they also take a lot of field trips- ie, the zoo, renaissance festival, six flags, etc

it sounds like fun, but it only helps people who arent taking challenging classes

yeah, i thought it was dumb too- itll be yet another culture shock this year- but if you start off liking high school, maybe you wont hate it all the way, like me

Dont worry about such petty things like who you should be with and what to do ....you gonna procrastinate and dwell on it .....and when that happens you wont be able to move on ....ive learned this from experience , you will be deeply affected if your nervous everyday .....just be yourself .....act the way you normally have and everything will be alright .....if you want to change change for the better make no friends work harder etc ....but never worry about it .....because sooner or later ...you will think pessimistically .....

Awwwwww. You kids are so young. I'm gonna be a Junior this year, upperclassman. Hooray.

I loved my freshman year. In all honesty, I think it was my best year ever. Lots of firsts. It's not bad at all, I promise. But then again, no one knew I was a freshman because most of my friends were older and I'd been asked if I was a senior quite often, so I'm not sure how it could have been if that didn't happen. Nonetheless, it was a great year. Be on the lookout, though. Most upperclassman aren't very fond of Freshmen, they tend to cause drama. Just be smart and enjoy your high school experience.

the rules for freshies at my school- they'll probably apply most places

- walk on the right side of the hall. don't stop
- don't carry around a map or schedule.
- don't congregate in a group in the hall.
- don't carry more than 2 books in a backpack. if you can't open your locker, borrow a friends. don't carry more than 1 book+2 binders without a backpack.
- bring your lunch on the first day, to make sure you get food.
- look like you know where you're going. don't stop to read signs. even if you're lost.
- if someone says 'freshmen' NEVER turn to look at who said it.
- don't talk about freshmen friday.

It's not that bad, really. Just don't be annoying (basically, don't let the whole room hear your conversations about Naruto or whatnot..I'm still annoyed at these 2 freshmen in my art class who talked about anime every single day...haha), don't clog up the hallways with your friends, USE FOLDERS or thin binders because they save your back, carry your huge textbooks in your arm (not more than 2!), act like you've been in that school your whole life, and ummm hang in there..you've got 4 more years to go. rolleyes.gif

we had a small batch of freshies this year;

had quite a few under 5'0'', and then some under 4'10'' these are guys we're talking about.

some of the freshie girls did look rather hot... (they're probably very immature tho...)

but it's usually hard to tell who's a freshman and who isn't.

i don't see what's so scary about high school. i'm also going to be a freshman in august, but the only thing i'm worried about is how i'm going to stay organized. we have no school supply list. wacko.gif

so, experienced people, how much room does your largest subject usually take in centimeters/inches?

hm, and i heard that we were going to be required to use our lockers this year. ermm.gif i'm locker challenged.

be proud that you've survived, not the be proud and stamp freshman on your forehead - or tshirt, like many of the rather idiotic girls at my future school have done.

like, omgzors, you're finally a high school fishie.

don't drown yourselves and the rest of our brains before we've gotten to the school, please.

A tip:
Once you're done with a unit, DO NOT throw your papers away and DO NOT keep them in your binder. You'll need them for exams (especially classes like math and chemistry and history) and if you keep them in your binder/folder, it's a waste of space. FILE them away or something. With only one or so units in your folder, it should take up like less than a centimeter of space, unless your teacher is crazy and gives you a million worksheets or else just really thick packets.

Um, when you ask around for directions. Make sure you ask someone nice, so they don't dump you in the trashcan.
And always carry a map of the school with you. This year (my frehsman year) I got lost during the second week of school -.- yeah, horrible sense of direction here.

I was (am, actually) really short, and that didn't make too much difference. Except for random people still thinking I was a frosh when I was a senior. XP

But then, I wasn't very scared, because I was in band so I already had 80-some people I could ask for help (that, and we were on campus months before school started for band camp, so it became a familiar campus). Moral: Join band. :P

I live in Texas and attend a school of 3500+. Being that its Texas, there's a large amount of 16 and 17 year old kids that look like full grown adults. Whats strange is that the freshman who come in each year, look no older than 11.

And for this reason, you mind your business. I've never shoved anyone in a locker, but I have put a fish in a trashcan because he thought he was tough enough to be on varsity (football) when he tipped the scale at 115lbs.

Don't be that fish.

I just finished my freshman year, don't worry too much about it, do your work, study, stay out of upper classmates' way, and be urself in you OWN class, so that ur not shunned when u try to get involved in sophmore year.

However, when ur in upperclassmates' company, careful and I suggest just shutting up, do NOT be yourself in that situation, keep as low a profile as possible in that situation.

It's not as bad as it's made out to be, don't worry! happy.gif

i have mixed emotions about entering high school next year. im sad because some of my friends aren't going to the same school as me, and im happy because it's a new chapter in my life and i'll be able to meet loads of new people, make new friends, and NEW GUYS! (that's what im looking forward to the most) I'm just scared that i'm not going to be able to find my way around the first week or so.

Haha, well, in the end, he and I became pretty close friends and I looked out for him throughout high school.

He was thrown in the trashcan for saying, "Man, I'm the best runningback this school will ever see. Yo Saunders! I'm takin ya spot!"

Seriously future fishes, there's nothing to fear if you don't do anything stupid. Or who knows, you can do something stupid and make a good friend out of it. wink.gif

no, justin..our school is closer than others, yes, but you can be intergrade friends.

i mean sure, some people tease you but it's all in fun..people will only bully you if you are outright annoying and immature. don't make it apparent you're a freshie and you'll have no problems. a lot of people thought i was a soph or junior last year just cause i didn't act like a little kid.

and yea, dooooon't procrastinate. your freshman year is likely to be your hardest. if there's a binder, you put those papers in. don't think you'll do it when the teacher says it's gonna be due in two days. that won't work. keep your binders up. do all of your homework. missing even one assignment can be the difference between a B and a C.

ehh. social dynamics are different at small schools and large schools.

like, at really really big schools, there are too many people for distinct cliks to be maintianed.

in my medium sized schools (1700 people), cliks are somewhat distinct, and the dynamics are different too. also, the general population that the school draws from (rocket scientists, no joke) also makes a difference. all these things result into a high school where if a few people like to mess around with the freshies, but other people just want the freshies to get out of the way. it leads to interesting freshie culture where the freshies are somewhat afraid of upperclassmen, they're made to do more in teams and such, but most upperclassmen simply ignore them.

that is, unless attention is drawn.

simply put; each school is generally a bit different on how they treat the freshies.

ours are generally ignored, unless they're befriended by friendly upperclassmen. of course, the way i look at things is more from a stand point of band, because it practically is like a mini school of its own.

Don't worry about Freshman year. I was scared too. It is a little hard at first and the first week or two may seem really long, but you'll quickly adjust to new surroundings. You'll learn how to organize yourself and get your work done. You'll make friends quickly too. =)

Oo, it's really not that bad.
Honestly, last year I thought I would be caught in hell and wouldn't escape it.

Hm, wait, you're going to be a freshmen in high school and you're afraid of your brother's friends which [the most they can be] are 3 years older than you?

Oh.... that's not that bad. Compared to being a kindergartener and having your brother's friend be a 5th grader.

Honestly, high school kids should know better than that.

be afraid. I HATE the freshmen at my school. they think they are all that since they are in highschool know WHOOOHOOO w/e....they all preppy and think they are adult and all. I hate them...I hope they burn alive biggrin.gif

but every highschool is different I guess...but just keep a guard up. make a few friends that are seniors or juniors or even sophmores...that will give you some back if you ever got messed with.
