i think those commercials that show how smoking is bad through other situations are awesome -- they're great ways to spread a message

-- such as that one where a guy's on a stage @ a carnival , w/ a crowd of people watching .. and w/ a curtain behind him . and he says " do you want to see tha kind of people that destroy our world each day ? " [[ or something like that ]] .. and then he pulls tha curtain, and it's a huge mirror, w/ tha reflection of tha crowd of people ..

-- and that one, where tha setting is @ tha mall .. and this guy w/ a huge barrel of cleaner spray on his back .. and he's going around tha mall spraying tha cleaner around people .. and tha people gett annoyed ..

then it's goes to a screen where a woman that works @ a bar w/ a headache and people smoking .. then a narrator says " people shouldn't be affected by second-hand smoke " .. describing how tha guy w/ tha cleaner spraying it near people ..

anyone know what i'm talking about ?? -- and what do you think of those commercials .. ?

I think these commercials are great to kids but not to adults who already smoke.....once they're addicted, hard for them to stop so they ignore all the bad things. Smoking to them is like right after air, food, and water

Eh .. the things in your body that get affected by smoking is pretty nasty. I think they should show those things. But yeah, I also love the Truth production called "Fair Enough" It shows what cigarette companies are doing. Also, there was an interview of one of the big executives of one big cigarette company when asked would they give their children cigarettes the guy said no way.

Ahh I love those commercials. Sadly, it doesn't prevent my dear Johnny from smoking. cry.gif Anywho, no matter how many facts you present towards smokers and potential smokers, the vast majority of them fail to listen. To quote Metallica, it's sad, but true.

I have to agree. Did anyone go through the D.A.R.E program? Yes, it was suppose to teach kids the dangers of smoking and what not while in elementary school. It was always fun to see my teachers with their D.A.R.E t-shirts on smoking behid the building.

As far as the commericals, they help those that are willing to listen.

Yeah. They are great commercials, and they send out a great message, but I have to agree. I don't think many smokers are affected by the commercials, unfortunately, and even if they are, I doubt they'd quit.

The one smoking commercials that actually work are the ones that gross people out. It showed a decline in younger kids starting to smoke. Statics are nice; I like them, but it's not working.

This is a smoker's lung ... with emphysema.

Tar on the lungs ... and the whitish stuff on top is cancer.

Self expanitory

... THIS is what they should show .. except ... not pictures - but the real deal.

I think they are awesome.

And like Kimeroo says. They should add those grossing out pictures that grosses out teenagers. I mean commericials with smoking air and signs doesn't help. They need to show those grossing pictures. And if people can't take those stuff, they should know that they shouldn't do smoking either.

I think it's a great way to get a message across. It may help motivate a smoker to quit. But to others who have tried to quit.. it could anger them a little.. considering maybe they couldn't stop with the things given to quit smoking.

I like the second one. I SO wanna try doing that.

Smoking is addicitng... It's hard to stop, expecially if you have some type of concern like depressing. Smoking should be ban but it will be hard to though.

Whoa, hold the muthaf-- phone, suckas!

1/3rd of the Confederacy's income during the decade prior to the Civil War was thanks to the tobacco leaf. Unfortunately, slaves were used to farm the product, but thats beside the point.

As far as agricultural progression in the southeast is concerned, tobacco helped to build this country and further its financial security in a major way up until the 1950s. Marlboro cigarettes aren't just cancer sticks smoked by you or your relatives, they help keep money flowing into state governments which in return build you new schools and fund interstates so there are less toll roads.

This country is all about freedom. Think about this; freedom of choice. So, cigarettes are abolished and made illegal. Thats a bit fascist, don't you think? If you honestly, and whole-heartedly believe that smoking cigarettes are going to be the cause for the smog in our air or "global warming," then move your ignorant ass to North Korea.

So banning cigarettes are going to prolong the inevitable?

Face it, you're gonna die. Secondhand smoke is half as deadly as carbon monoxide or gasoline fumes. How often are you exposed to that?

The commercials use shock-value to market the "truth" to the public. People have a right to smoke. If I'm worrying about making enough moeny on a meager salary to support my family and provide for my kid's future, and then when I come home, I have an ungrateful wife on my case, I'd want a smoke too, damnit.

Its such a vague statement to say "secondhand smoke causes lung cancer, which can kill you." An absent minded driver t-boning your car can kill you, eating too much of a food you didn't know you were allergic to can kill you, mixing OTC medicines can kill you. All of the preceeding can kill you instantly. So you took a whiff of some stale menthol smoke? Big deal. You'll live.

"Cigarettes killed my father and raped my mother!" [Family Guy Reference]

Actually, the vast majority of teen smokers, at least, has dropped by some insane number (don't remember the stat exactly, but is was impressive) since the start of the D.A.R.E. program and things like the Truth commercials.

You guys are miscontruing what THETRUTH actually stands for:

QUOTE
let's start by telling you what truth is not:
truth is not anti-smoker. We love smokers. In fact, we love everybody. truth isn't about passing judgement on people or the choices they make. As far as we're concerned, smoker, non-smoker, non-issue.

And truth is not here to tell you, or anyone else, what to do. We hate when people do that. So you're never gonna hear any "just say 'no' to cigarettes" stuff from us. But there's an industry out there that makes billions of dollars selling a product that's responsible for over 1,200 deaths a day in the U.S. alone. This industry spends more than $34 million each day advertising and promoting those products, and it's entrenched itself in our culture by deceiving and manipulating the public. truth just thinks everyone ought to know more about that industry and the things they do.

truth makes sure all the facts are available. That way, when you make your own decisions, they can be based on all the information, not just those things tobacco companies want you to think. But truth is also an idea, and maybe it's bigger than just tobacco. It's about thinking for yourself and not allowing friends, teachers, politicians, television, movies or an industry to do it for you. It's about making your own decisions based on knowledge and respecting the choices others make as well. So go ahead. Apply truth liberally and wipe some on your friends.

The truth is geared towards tobacco companies, and what they have been doing to society.

I think the commercials are annoying. There are a few that are good though. Makes people who already smoke regret it even more and those people who work in cigarette companies lose money. This could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. People shouldn't smoke because it pollutes the air, but then why drive a car? Well, what I'm trying to say is that people shouldn't try so hard to stop people from smoking (commercials, DARE). It's a smoker's own fault and they're not harming anyone but themselves. Second-hand smoking is very minimal and doesn't harm your body that much if it's spread out. I've second-hand smoked at least 2 or 3 cigarettes (Las Vegas 3 years in a row). Sit in a no-smoking area in a restaurant and if there aren't any, you don't have to go there at all. ermm.gif

The thing is ... if we're more informed less people will stop smoking in the future. Catch the drift? Of course we can't prevent smokers right now ... but stopping future ones will probably help a lot of people .. except the smoking company.

Excuse my French, madamme but that's Propa-fcukin'-ganda.

So lets ignore the positive impact that tobacco has on our economy or even how our rights would be stripped from us by the banning of these beloved cancer sticks. Lets look at the facts and how many people got lung cancer last year and are terminally ill. There's the Surgeon General's warning on the back of every pack and carton, who's fault is it? Lets blame the wicked tobacco companies!!!

Is there anyone out there attacking Anheuser Busch? Or Pfizer and Zeneca Pharmeceuticals?

Maybe its just me, but when you turn on a tv and see a TRUTH commercial after the Blacked Eyed Peas video, its as if this encouraged social/political awareness is marketed in such a matter that it is merely a trend. "Wow, those commercials are hella deep, man. Save the environment and save my lungs. I'm down with TRUTH!" Umm, err, yeah. So are you anti-tobacco because of truth commercials or are you anti-tobacco because you seriously, whole-heartedly, see something wrong with the leaf itself?

i agree those commercials are good for younger kids but not for teens or adults.

to tell you the truth, most adults i know only stop smoking (usually only for a period of time) when they had a child. some stop for 9 months, 6 years and some actually STOP.

but yea.. i dont know smoking is a really hard habit to kick

smoking is only addictive to some people:

after the first smoke, there are 3 kinds of people:

1. people that will never do it again
2. people who like it, but aren't addicted. they can go weeks without a ciggarette, or smoke 3 in a day, and it doens't matter to them
3. people who get addicted to it, and must smoke continously.

that being said, if you fall in the 3rd group, tough luck:

this teacher, her brother was trying to ger his friend to quit smoking. his friend said he couldn't. so her brother made a bet: he'd smoke a pack a day for a week, and then quit. and when he quite, his friend would have to quit. both still smoke today.

Did I mention the future .. or did you not catch that part?

Anyway, it's somewhat weird to smoke. I mean so many people know what the after effects of smoking .. I mean, you obviously don't have to try it. Like someone said before, there's a warning on every pack. Let's put it into simple matters, you know how well what a sharp knife can do and you obviously don't have to stab yourself in the heart to know what it feels to be stabbed in the heart. It hurts much like anything sharp that comes in contact with your body .. probably even much more than that.

If you're referring to The Truth, you're wrong.

The Truth is geared towards making the people aware of what tabacco companies do not make the people aware of. The truth is NOT an anti-smoking campaign!

If you're referring to The Truth, you're wrong.

The Truth is geared towards making the people aware of what tabacco companies do not make the people aware of. The truth is NOT an anti-smoking campaign!

They can put good points across, but a lot of people won't listen to the message.
Smoking is just already such a huge part of society, it's hard to tell people to just stop.

Okay, your mom getting on your nerves isn't relevent to what I asked, unless you forgot to explain how the commericals factor in with your mom annoying you.

i really am against smoking, but i suppose it's here and there's not really a way we could take it away from our world.

i do think if you have kids, though, you should not be allowed to smoke around them. (in the house, in the car, etc.)
