But the dough is hot and the ice cream inside is still cold?

oooh. i know how they do it :)
they make the ice cream into balls then freeze it for a while till they're hard.
then you dip it into this egg mixture of like eggs and vanilla and then roll it in this corn flake mixture.
then you put it back in the freezer, and repeat the dipping process another couple of times. then you put it in over nite. the next day you take it out, and fry each one for 15 seconds. then it's brown, but the ice cream is still hard but not too hard :)

I went to a Mexican resturaunt today with the Spanish club, and we were dicussing it, so one of the guys I was with got some, but the girls were ridiculously skinny, and since (even though I'm definitely not fat) I'm about twice their size, so I refrained.

fried ice cream is served hot and mochi is served cold.

my friend's family owns a japanese restaurant. it's yummy. the dough is crispy on the outside and soft (because of the melted ice cream) on the inside.

it melts but not enough that the ice cream completely turns to liquid.

at my friend's restaurant, they mold the ice cream into balls and freeze them untill they are rock hard. then, they wrap the ice cream in pound cake and squeeze the cake around the ice cream so it's like a shell. then they dip it in batter and toss it in hot oil for a moment until the batter is fried.

it's sooo good.

they don't FRY the ICE CREAM because it'd MELT.

they fry the crispy doughy stuff on the outside and then roll the icecream in it.

^but that's a really messy way to serve it. the wrapping will slip and slid off when people try to eat it. also fried dough is extremely hard to work with after it's fried. it's weak and crispy so it breaks easily.

i've said before that my best friend's family owns a japanese restaurant. many people asked her how it's done. they shape the ice cream balls and freeze them till they are hard and then they wrap in a shell of pound cake (which was also chilled beforehand). they freeze that a little bit more then dunk it in batter. they toss it in hot oil long enough for the batter outside to turn crispy. when it's served, the ice cream is still cold but some of it has melted and just swims around...

i think i need to go to my friend's house... wink.gif

The only bad thing about tempura ice cream is that you can't just cut into the bread part. You have to bite it, and the ice cream will melt fast.

Love it, though.

But I know fried ice cream to be something that I order in a Mexican restaurant. It's delicious, and I usually order it coated in honey. Yummmm.
