so recently a writer has consistently been coming my school and writing about it but this time she wrote an extremly negaive, stereotypical, and just plain bad article about Asians at my school

this is the article
http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/Stories/0,...2858314,00.html

and if you felt at all offended by it, even though i doubt any of you actually go to my school, please sign it. i know a lot of you are Asians and i just want you to think about how you'd feel if some writer decided to basically say that the only reason you have good grades is because you have no life and all you do is go to tutor. stubborn.gif yeaaa

http://www.petitiononline.com/psnrtcl/petition.html

so help out and thanks for your time happy.gif

:edit:

i forgot to mention that next year's asb president is NOT Asian and our homecoming queen isnt full asian. even though our school does not excel in football and basketball; we do excel in sports such as wrestling, volleyball, basketball, swim, golf, and tennis. and also we dont use the term "fobbing" and wtfreak does fobbing mean anyway. if fobbing is actually used i really doubt it means " blaring Chinese pop tunes on the stereo or picking up red bean popsicles and frozen shumai at the Chinese supermarket. " Cindy Chang's article is basically full of facts she found not from the asians of the community

:edit number dos:
forget it im going to stop explaining things it's too hard. let me shorten it down for you. i found her article to be totally full of bs. her facts were wrong. i have never heard anyone on my campus use "fobbing" lindsey lost because there were more qualified people running agaisnt her, Cindy Chang hardly questioned any of the asian population, and for someone who went to Yale; her writing fricken sucks.

At San Marino High School, the homecoming queen is Asian, the student body president is Asian, and the football roster is seeded with names like Lim, Chen and Wang. In the advanced math and science classes, there are only a few white faces in a sea of Asians.

How so? If the majority of the school is Asian, wouldn't it make sense that Asians have an easier time winning votes? Lets not delude ourselves into thinking that homecoming queens are voted on true beauty and intelligence instead of popularity. If the school's majority is White, there's a good chance that the homecoming queen be White. Considering American culture, this should be expected.

What exactly is the author racist about? She has stats saying that the majority is Asians and they're setting high standards. Is this stereotypical? Maybe, maybe not. I know my parents don't set high standards for me, but I KNOW other Asian parents aren't as generous as mine. I don't think it's stereotyical, I think it's somewhat true.

Edit: ya'll are funny.

oops i didnt mean to write racist. im sorry i meant to write stereoptyping cause that's what I was angry about. stereotyping and getting facts wrong is different. people at my school dont want to be regarded as the kids who have no lives and wont be able to live in the real world because we live in an asian bubble of studying for the SAT. yea so 4 people in my school got 2400s so WHAT? that doesnt mean the rest of us all go to tutor, study all day, and care about nothing but grades and eating. catch my drift?

i don't understand a problem... i read the article, and she was just reporting her observations. of course not all asians are like that, but from her "sources", a majority of them are... that's why it's a stereotype.

This article clearly violates the high standards of journalism. She used brash generalizations much like those she claims Asian students do to white students at San Marino. Her supposed facts are not as accurate as they should have been making clear she did not write about what she saw, only what she wanted to see. The article in effect supports racism as she looks down upon Asian culture for not being more like the American culture she prefers. No matter how badly Miss Chang wants to make a story, obtaining and manipulating facts in this blatant manner violates the supposed integrity of journalism expected from an established newspaper.

...how is she looking down on asians when she's practically idolizing them in this article? i don't understand why you're offended when people say asians are harder working and do better at school than other ethnicities because of pressure from their traditional parents.

i agree with you on one thing: her writing does suck... which is why i hardly think it's worthy enough to be called "racist". it has no voice... she's simply writing neutral comments for the sake of writing, lol. either you guys are reading too much into this, or you don't like being praised ;x. she never even outright stated that the reason "lindsey" lost the election is because asians vote for asians... she implied it, and showed statistics on the school population.
QUOTE
But at San Marino High School, the conventional wisdom is that it is difficult for a white candidate to muster enough votes from a student body that is more than 70 percent Asian.

But at San Marino High School, the conventional wisdom is that...

it's conventional wisdom that people like to hang out with people who are similar to themselves. it's no surprise if it was a fact that asians vote for asians... just look at our last election. who do you think voted for bush?

wow does she have something against asians or something (even though she is asian). I don't get why she is making such a big deal of it considering there are going to be certain schools that have higher levels of a certain ethnicities than others. It isn't anything new. I'm definetly going to sign the petition, because what she writes about is such lame crap.

agree.
though it is stereotypical, it isn't really racist. And personally, it is true of a lot of my asian friends. Quite a few of them whose parents push them REALLY hard to excel. But not all, which is why it's stereotypical to me. But I don't think she was trying to be racist.

^Hello?? Do you people not know how to read? THIS IS NOT RACISM.
She's just stereotyping since most Asians are like that. :x You should be proud of what she's saying although it is a little stretched. She used statistics to show her point and well, I don't understand what the big deal is.

That's not even remotely racist. Hell, it's almost like a compliment...

'Asians do better than whites on standardized tests.'

That doesn't make you proud of your race? The author also talked about how well the tennis team at San Marino does, and how it is almost 100% Asian.

Something tells me you're just making a fuss to make a fuss.

Not signing.

^ Same.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see the big deal.
There is some stereotyping, but guess what- everybody stereotypes. Everybody. Different degrees of it, but it isn't exactly something against human nature. Though I do agree that if she is going to try to write an article she should not include silly stereotypes.
