I remember a time
In the subtle dark
When the breeze rattles the chyme
And dogs release their bark

A whisper came to me
Letting a secret in my ear
It said "They won't let you be"
After a pause, "You have much to fear."

After that, I could find no sleep
Unrest left me in dismay
Many children can only weep
When the whisper comes to stay

A cry at every bump
Desperation at every creak
Was it your sister falling on a nasty clump
Or a monsterous, one-eyed freak

What is the whisper and why am I its host?
Remember through your tears
The whisper is no man, nor ghost
It is everyone's childhood fears
