We have a Social Forum here at school. we tried to bring up issues like that when people considered who to vote for in the recent elections

i feel so frustrated when i read lists like that. i mean, i vote, but that's not enough. i just get so sad when i think of little kids and how they suffer in some of those situations cry.gif

i seriously depressed myself for the night. i just hope maybe when ppl read some of those things, they might considered helping out at a shelter or children's home

to beat the 40 random facts thread, here are 50 facts that actually mean something, as published in the book. will knowledge motivate us toward change?

15. THERE are 44 million child labourers in India, some working 16-hour days.

2. BLACK men born in the US stand a one-in-three chance of going to jail. For white men the odds are one in 17.

why? does that mean that one in three black men commit a crime, or that they are wrongly imprissoned?

3. ONE in five of the world's population - 1.25 billion people - is undernourished.

thats horrible... last friday my friend and i raised £230 for comic relief. thats enough to feed 920 african children for a day.

4. NEARLY half of British 15-year-olds have tried illegal drugs and nearly a quarter are regular cigarette smokers.

raises hand. i dont smoke any more. i quit.

6. EIGHTY-ONE per cent of the world's executions in 2002 took place in just three countries: China, Iran and the USA.

yeah... although to be fair, between them they do have afairly massive percentage fo the world's population

7. SUPERMARKETS in the UK know more about their customers than the government does. They use loyalty cards to determine your income and what your interests are.

i dont hav aloyalty card... i dont know what one is

8. EVERY cow in the EU is subsidised by £1.40 a day - three out of four Africans have less than that to live on.

that is hideous

9. SAME-SEX relationships are illegal in more than 70 countries. In nine - including Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia - the penalty is death.

also disgusting

36. ALMOST 30 million Africans are HIV-positive. By 2050 the disease may have claimed as many as 280 million lives.
46. MORE than 12,000 women are killed in Russia every year as a result of domestic violence.

that was some very useful knowledge.

i learned at an early age how screwed this world is and how powerless i am But one thing that i know is that we're all humans and as long as we have good intentions in our hearts and choose to do right maybe this would be a little bit shorter

well, i plan to pursue a degree in developmental economics; in the future, i want to work for the United Nations, perhaps in the human rights sector or for the World Health Organization. i think that for now, we should keep everything in mind (a lot of Americans are very domestically-oriented.. international crises aren't of concern to them) so that when we are more "empowered," we can help to make relief efforts more efficient and more effective. all this idealism (a lot of people call me idealistic, naive, whatever, but i believe in this) comes partially from the texts i've read and participation in Model United Nations, which ... can be tedious and doesn't really accomplish much, but at least i'm learning about all these issues. i'm also a a member of Amnesty International, which is an awareness/action organization that promotes human rights and acts especially to free prisoners of conscience.

if your school has a chapter, i'd definitely recommend you to join, and if not, you can start your own "global awareness" club, or something of the sort. as a teenager (i'm assuming?) you can do little things like fundraising and then donating the profits to UNICEF or Amnesty or any other relief organizations. if you're interested or have any questions, feel free to PM me.

28. AMERICANS spend £5.6bn on pornography every year - the same amount their government spends on foreign aid.

That's why we should be glad we have Bearshare!

But seriously, most of those facts that I have read are true, yes some are sad...

Its very nice that you're very devoted to a cause. I wish I had the motivation, personally im a political kinda guy. Its true that Americans are domestic oriented but you also have to factor in the society nowadays. Americans are too focused with todays pop culture, and are too lazy. Even our news are too biased, they're too pro america and too pro bush, and they're feeding the american public uneeded crap (ie micheal jackson).

I hafta admire your goals, its nice to see someone so young as yourself without their head in their ass.
