okay so i have to do this huge paper for social studies .at least 3 pgs ..and i need to write a thesis about how the person changed the world as people know it. and how we still use their inventions today. and i have to do my project on this guy philip danford armour.. he was an inventor who helped build meat packing into a great industry...can somebody help me make maybe a thesis about him? or can find any info. on him..cuz i cant find like any?? thanks a bunch! =]
EDIT this is what i have so far... thanks for all the help! i came up with this thesis so far: Philip Armour helped build the meat packing industry by creating regeration systems following the Civil War. These systems were the foundations for todays methods by which we transport and store foods that require storage at cold temperatures. This technique enabled large citys to develop at distances away from the farms does that make sense to anyone? if it does..now i just have to write a three pg. report on him :( .. i was thinking doing it like with these topics: A. the motivation behind the invention B.The difficulties of the making the invention C. How it impacted the time period D. The affect it had on other inventions E. The signifigance of the invention for society now i just need to find info. to back it up..can anyone help me find some good info.? maybe biographys on him. or something i can use to make an introduction? thanks for all the help! you guys are great! |

the only thing that i can think of is that this invention helped increase the shelf life of meat. meaning, meat can now last longer. it can be purchased for others to buy instead of having to slaughter your own cow, which is time and money. it may help decrease infection and spreading of diseases seeing the meat is well packaged. also, the meat can be reused instead of having to be used all at that moment so nothing is wasted. i dont know, but good luck! go to the library, there may be something there you can research on.

in your thesis, you should state what he accomplished and what significance these accomplishments had on society. for example, if i were writing a paper on helen keller (yes, a role model for me), my thesis would be something like:
"helen keller overcame her disabilities, graduated from radcliffe college, and became a celebrated speaker and author; her perseverance and discipline have inspired young women throughout the world." the first part lists her accomplishments, which will be developed and explained later on in the paper. the second part states the significance of these achievements. your thesis should basically state your main purpose and the points that you're going to develop throughout your paper. my english teacher explains the thesis as a "so?" and a "so what?" the "so" is what the person did; the "so what" is why it's important. ![]() |

for info, simply search google, online databases, etc. i'd suggest that you make an outline of your essay before writing it. |

QUOTE(alli @ Mar 13 2005, 3:54 PM) Philip Armour helped build the meat packing industry by creating regeration systems following the Civil War. These systems were the foundations for todays methods by which we transport and store foods that require storage at cold temperatures. This technique enabled large citys to develop at distances away from the farms Philip Armour helped build the meat packing industry by creating regeration systems that is still used today in transportation and food storage at cold temperatures, and revolutionized ... blah blah.. idk (how this affected the industry/technology/economy?)... Since the "thesis" is usually packed into one sentence, I suggest you condense what you have so far. The first part of the paper should then cover how he "helped build the meat packing industry with his regenerating systems". The second part should talk about how this technology has changed or how it was so effective that it remained the same and how well it works, or why it is still used today. Then lastly, how the technolgy changed other techs or helped the meat packing industry or even broader... how it helped different industries.... That's one of many ways you could do it. |

Could you put it in more than one sentence?
Philip Armour's invention of the meath packing industry changed American society. // end point. [Why?] He helped build systems that could transport and store food. ^for this, it's confusing. You have two "thats" in the same sentence, so I don't think that should be used. Also, the sentence sounds rambled. Don't put "because", "that", and "that". I'd write: Philip Armour’s invention of the meat packing industry changed American society. Foods that required cold temperatures was transported and stored in better ways through his system. |

i'd change it to: Philip Armour, the inventor of the meat packing industry, changed American society by improving systems that transport and store perishable foods. coherent, flowing, stylish, yet not redundant. |
